Melbourne-based Irish banjo player and singer Maggie Carty presents an intimate solo performance of her debut album Ebb and Flow at the Irish Club of WA in Perth. This special concert, held on Saturday 23 August, invites audiences on a deeply personal musical journey through Irish folk tradition, reimagined with Australian folk influences, bluesy undertones, and transcontinental soul.

Originally from Boyle in County Roscommon on the west coast of Ireland, Maggie is a fourth-generation musician who brings a fresh energy and a unique female voice to the tradition. Now living in Naarm/Melbourne, she blends rhythm-driven banjo playing with expressive vocals and draws contemporary inspiration from Americana and blues. Her music breathes new life into old songs while honouring the history and stories of the Irish diaspora. Since moving to Australia in 2017, Maggie has become a recognised voice in the national folk scene. She has performed at some of the country’s most celebrated festivals including Port Fairy Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival, and CresFest. Her work celebrates cultural connections between Ireland and Australia and explores themes of migration, belonging, and identity with warmth, grit, and emotion.

This performance is part of Maggie Carty’s national Australian tour supported by Culture Ireland. The tour will see her visit every state and territory across the country as she presents Ebb and Flow: Songlines of the Diaspora between August and October 2025. Join Maggie for an unforgettable evening of traditional songs, reimagined through banjo, voice, and story, in the welcoming surrounds of the Irish Club of WA.

Kevin Saunders - Tribute

It is with heartfelt sadness that we pay tribute following the recent passing of one of our members. Kevin Saunders was a long-term supporter and member of Comhaltas in Perth and was an active participant in playing the tenor banjo and button accordion and set dancing.

Kevin performed on stage with Comhaltas for many years around Perth and at country locations where his skills as a pilot came to the fore, flying Comhaltas members to concerts as far away as Kalgoorlie. Originally from the UK, Kevin worked for many years as an electrical engineer with Western Power.

Sincere condolences to Kevin’s partner Pauline and all of Kevin’s family here in Australia and back in the UK. Rest in Peace Kevin, you will be sadly missed by one and all.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend the service for Kevin Roger Saunders formerly of Lesmurdie at St Barnabas, Anglican Parish of Kalamunda, 40 Railway Road, Kalamunda, WA 6076 on WEDNESDAY at 11.00am (16.07.2025).
