Women are at an increased risk of experiencing violence from an intimate partner during pregnancy. Young people are particularly at risk for this type of violence during pregnancy.

The violence may begin during pregnancy, or if there was already violence in the relationship it can increase during pregnancy and early parenthood.

If you are pregnant, a new parent, or planning a pregnancy and experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence, 1800RESPECT can support you.

Family violence incidents involving fi****ms in Tasmania have more than doubled in four years, Tasmania Police figures tabled at budget estimates show.

The data, released after questions from independent Nelson MLC Meg Webb, showed incidents where a firearm was used or threatened rose from 69 in 2021-22 to 140 in 2024-25, while total family violence reports rose 53 per cent.

Webb called the 103 per cent jump “shocking and disturbing” and said the use of potentially lethal weapons in family violence needed urgent action.

Police said firearm licences are revoked and guns seized when family violence orders are made, while Commissioner Donna Adams said a public firearm incidents dashboard could go live within weeks.

A Sydney woman who survived a brutal domestic violence stabbing has told a court that repeated warning signs of stalking, harassment and intimidation "should have been enough" to prevent the near-fatal attack.

Anthony Monteleone has been sentenced to a maximum of 13 years in prison after being found guilty of wounding with intent to murder. The court heard he became obsessed with the woman after their short relationship ended and refused to accept her repeated attempts to cut contact.

Despite an apprehended violence order being in place, Monteleone tracked the woman to a gym car park in Alexandria in May 2024 and stabbed her multiple times in the head, neck and chest during what prosecutors described as a ferocious attack.

In a powerful victim impact statement, the woman said the attack was not a misunderstanding but a deliberate act by a man who could not accept rejection. She urged authorities and the community to take warning signs seriously, saying action must come before violence, not after.

The court heard two brave bystanders intervened during the attack, with prosecutors arguing their actions may have saved the woman's life. Monteleone will not be eligible for parole until late 2033.
