AIDR The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) is the National Institute for disaster risk reduction and resilience.

We collaborate across sectors to strengthen the resilience of Australian communities to disasters. AIDR creates, grows, and supports a range of networks; provides opportunities for learning, development, and innovation; shares knowledge and resources to enable informed decision making and action; and facilitates thought leadership through national conversations. AIDR contributes to a more disaster

resilient Australia through four key influencing strategies that encapsulate AIDR’s work:
-Actively supporting, growing and sustaining a range of networks across sectors and jurisdictions.
-Enabling those with a role in disaster risk reduction and resilience to come together
to learn, develop and innovate.
-Collecting, developing, curating and sharing knowledge to educate and promote good practice in disaster risk reduction and resilience.

The 2027 Lessons Management Forum (LMF27) call for abstracts is now open.

Taking place in Hobart and online from 25-27 May 2027, LMF27 will explore emerging trends, technologies, challenges, and opportunities shaping the future of lessons management across the emergency management spectrum.

LMF27 is seeking presentations, workshops, and posters that support those new to lessons management, advance professional practice, or share lessons identified and lessons learned.

Topics of interest include predictive learning, learning during operations, embedding lessons into policy and practice, learning across organisations and sectors, the value of lessons management, AI and technology, and diverse ways of knowing and learning.

Congratulations to the winners of the Poster Awards!

Throughout the conference last week, delegates visited the poster display in the AIDR Knowledge Centre to explore research, initiatives, and projects from across the disaster resilience sector, connect with authors and researchers, and vote for their favourite poster.

Winner: Leading collaborative pumping reform: integrity, inclusion, and operational impact at Fire Rescue Victoria – A/SSO Jamie Dahlenburg, A/SO Craig Denehy, and LFF Matt Van Tilburg (Fire Rescue Victoria)

Highly commended: First Nations women in fire: a hidden and skilled workforce – Zoe Schultz, Nell Reidy, Jess Walters, Chloe Swiney, Kylee Clubb, Alex Lacey and Associate Professor Bhiamie Williamson (National Indigenous Disaster Resilience)

In the closing keynote, Dr Jorian Kippax recounted the Franklin River rescue, one of the most complex rescue operations in Tasmania's history, and the collective effort required to save a life against incredible odds.

A fitting reminder that resilience is built through preparation, collaboration and the commitment of people working together when it matters most.

At , Alisha Chand and Anita Egginton from Queensland Kids Partnership shared how the Thriving Kids in Disasters initiative is bringing together partners across sectors to ensure children's development, wellbeing, and resilience are embedded in disaster management systems.

Their presentation highlighted the importance of shifting mindsets, strengthening collaboration and creating systems where the needs of children, young people and families are considered in preparedness, response, and recovery decisions from the outset.

At , Nell Reidy and Associate Professor Bhiamie Williamson from Monash University and National Indigenous Disaster Resilience introduced the National Framework to Enhance the Resilience of Indigenous People and Communities.

The first national policy focused on Indigenous people and communities in disaster resilience and response, the framework encourages a shift away from deficit-based approaches and towards recognising the strengths, leadership, and self-determination of Indigenous communities.

The presentation highlighted the importance of working alongside Indigenous communities as essential partners in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience.

At , Professor Jane Fisher AO and Dr Revathi Nuggehalli Krishna from Monash University shared research into the long-term health impacts of the 2019-20 bushfires, where they highlighted the enduring mental health challenges experienced by regional communities years after the event.

Meanwhile, Tom Robinson and Damien Skurrie from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action explored how cultural heritage protection is being embedded into disaster planning and response and demonstrated the value of Traditional Owner leadership and partnerships in strengthening resilience for both communities and Country.
