Today, staff from the Lower Hunter District, supported by Port Stephens Council and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 402 Salamander Bay, held a street meeting in Nelson Bay to discuss all things bush fire safety ahead of the upcoming fire season.

With conditions predicted to be drier than normal, now is the time to take steps to prepare your property and make a plan, so you know what to do if a fire threatens.

Firefighters will be taking advantage of favourable conditions to conduct a Hazard Reduction Burn on Thursday 13th August 2026.

Residents in the area may see or smell smoke and those with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area, stay indoors with your windows closed and to activate your health plan if required.

After two days of intense competition it is with great pride that we announce that after winning 3 or the 5 categories and coming 3rd in another, Vacy Brigade has Won the Championship 🥇

Vacy’s effort, hard work, communication and teamwork is to be commended. With many skilled teams participating it was a close finish of the top four teams.

NSW RFS volunteers will test their firefighting and emergency response capabilities at the inaugural Hunter Area Championships this weekend.

10 teams representing 6 different districts will take part in the two day competition being held at Macksville showground.

The Summit Point Fire continues to burn to the East of Mulbring, crews will be back on scene through out the day supported by aircraft working to bring the fire under control.

Smoke may be visible and may settle into low lying areas during the evening.

There is a fire currently burning to the East of Mulbring, crews have worked throughout the day to build a containment line around the fire.

Smoke may be visible into the night and settle into low lying areas. Crews will be returning in the morning to patrol the fire.

Today, is St Florian’s Day, a significant day for the firefighting community. Named after the patron saint of firefighters, this day is traditionally an opportunity to come together and recognise members who have gone above and beyond in service.

This weekend, firefighters from the Lower Hunter have been busy crewing the RFS booth at the Tocal Field Day.

It provided a great opportunity for firefighters to engage with the local community and share tips on bushfire safety.
