Black Country Living Museum & Dudley Canal

At the heart of the industrial West Midlands, the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley brings canal heritage vividly to life. Spread across 26 acres, it recreates the sights, sounds and stories of the region that fuelled the Industrial Revolution – with houses, shops, factories, and, of course, the canal at its centre.

Right beside the museum lies the Dudley Canal Tunnel & Limestone Mines, once vital for transporting raw materials like limestone and coal to nearby furnaces. Horses couldn’t tow boats through these tunnels, so boatmen had to “leg” the boats through, lying on planks and pushing against the walls with their feet – an exhausting job that could take hours.

Today, visitors can enjoy underground boat trips through the tunnels and caverns, with sound and light shows revealing how the rock was mined and carried away. It’s one of the few places in Britain where you can truly experience what canal boatmen once faced beneath the ground.

The museum and canal trips together tell a powerful story: how the waterways shaped not just the Black Country, but Britain itself. ⚒️🚤

⚡️⚡️BOOM⚡️⚡️

Touchdown just in front of Nobbys Lighthouse as the storm rolled over Newcastle this afternoon. This one definitely made me jump—and it sure cleared the water of the remaining swimmers!
