Activate Tree Planting

We plants trees to help revegetate and repair degraded agricultural lands around the WA Wheatbelt region. We dance while we do it.

Activate Tree Planting host annual tree-planting music festivals run by a community of volunteers, uniting the love of our earth with the love of music and great fun. Government regulations during Australia's early colonial era saw the Wheatbelt region experience the clearing of critical bush land for farming practices. This mass destruction of the regions natural habitat has caused many serious e

nvironmental issues including salinity, erosion and loss of habitat. Activate Tree Planting hosts up to 3 tree planting events in these rural areas, planting tens of thousands of trees each winter while showcasing local musical talents and building strong community. These events are family friendly and encourage people to get back in touch with nature, form life long friendships, have a good dance, and most importantly help our planet by getting native trees in the ground. For twenty years we have been revegetating the Western Australian Wheatbelt with a team of hard working volunteers from diverse backgrounds, our mobile DJ truck, and the help of local farmers, grants and sponsorships. All fueled by nourishing organic wholefood from our volunteers in the kitchen. Activate Tree Planting gets back in touch with Mother Nature through the spirit of celebration and the physical planting of trees. We repair our environment whilst meeting new friends and experiencing one of the rawest, connected and meaningful West Australian Bush festivals.

This year we planted 66,000 Trees and danced them into the ground through sunshine storm and rain!

😍Woohoo🌳🌳🌳 another 25,000 native seedlings planted at our recent Activate Nomans Lake event🙌

It was a beautiful weekend spent healing Boodja with Ngala Boorna Moort (Our Tree Family).

A weekend full of tree planting, dancing, singing, story-telling, sharing delicious food and celebrating the amazing things we can achieve when working together as a community🫶

Big thanks to our major sponsor Regenerate Australia who funded 21,000 seedlings.

We also planted 2000 seedlings as part of a Living Firebreak trial organised by South West NRM. Plus a further 2000 seedlings supplied by the land owner Angus Armstrong.

Thanks also to Trillion Trees Australia, Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group, SERCUL and Dumbleyung Landcare for lending us planting equipment.

Here are a few photos of our upcoming 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 - taken at the end of January.

This year we will be planting 20,000 native trees and shrubs funded by Regenerate Australia 🙌💚

This bit of land has become increasingly salt affected and unproductive for cropping, so we have a great opportunity to plant deep rooted native trees which will help to lower the water table and reduce the impacts of salinity. The native plants will also increase biodiversity and provide habitat for local wildlife🐦🦋🦎🦘

We really appreciate working with farmers who value trees and other native vegetation in their farming landscape🌱🌳

👨‍🌾Angus Armstrong, the owner of this farm, has an immense passion for tree planting and we have had the privilege of working with him for a number of years, planting corridors of trees across his farm.

(Little side note: Angus has already planted 27,000 native seedlings this year🤩 What a legend!!)

🫶🏿This year we want to celebrate and highlight our friendship with a very important organisation: 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒖𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒂 𝑴𝒊𝒂

Marmun Mia-Mia Aboriginal Corporation is a Noongar community-led organisation based in Armadale, WA. This organisation walks alongside Aboriginal men, families and community through healing, culture, connection and wellbeing. Through programs grounded in relationships, lived experience and cultural strength, Marmun Mia-Mia creates spaces for growth, accountability, healing and belonging.

Activate’s connection with Marmun Mia Mia began four years ago through a shared commitment to healing of Country, self and community. What started as joining together to plant trees has grown into a valued relationship built on respect, generosity, learning and genuine human connection. We also have fun together, enjoy live music, share meals, and have heart warming discussions around a cup of tea or near the fire.

Activate was gifted a Noongar name by our Elders Viv and Mort Hansen. They have been coming to the events for over a decade. They support and inspire us, and bless us with their incredible generosity and knowledge. Adrian Tanner, former member of Marmun Mia Mia joined Activate’s board in 2024 and coined the name “𝑵𝒈𝒂𝒍𝒂 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒂 𝑴𝒐𝒐𝒓𝒕” – 𝑂𝑢𝑟 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝐹𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 - . He said “𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑙, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦”.

A little background on our Esperance Activate journey, we have done an event in 2024 and 2025, mostly focused around us locals. This has given our crew time to grow and find our feet, play with the magic of the Activate approach. We're excited to welcome the WA Tree Family in 2026.

We've been consistently planting on a spectacular property, Riverlee, that sits in the Dalyup catchment west of Esperance. The rivers that run through this catchment meander across the landscape to the Lake Gore Wetland System, an internationally protected Ramsar wetland system due to being home to migratory birds visiting all the way from Siberia. It's beautiful, special and needs protecting. We're thankful for the continued support of Riverlees custodians to provide us the opportunity to host Activate events.

Every year we welcome so many beautiful new humans to our Tree Family. Activate Wagin 2026 was no different. After planting close to 40,000 seedlings and dancing them into the ground we've had a few days to settle back into our regular lives, filled with amazing energy and love from our weekend of celebrating Mother Nature and caring for country.

We are blessed with an extended family of supporters and sponsors who give so much to Activate, making sure we are sheltered, well fed, cared for and have a great time.

Our major partner for Activate Wagin was Trillion Trees Australia who provided 40,000 seedlings, most of the planting tools and helped us plan and run the tree planting.

🥗☕️️Eating healthy food is extremely important to us, and we had a bunch of amazing donations and support to ensure the food was healthy for us and our planet:
𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 - Provided organic fruit, veggies and other groceries to feed our tree planters.
𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐲 - Gave us delicious Sourdough Bread that we freeze and take to events.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 - Stocked us up with dried food, rice, beans, grains and olive oil.
𝐍𝐢𝐦𝐫𝐨𝐝 𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐦 - Lent us some essential cooking equipment - large paella pans, bain-marie pans and large cooking pots.
𝐁𝐢𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐧 - Gave us that essential coffee supply that kick started the day and kept us motivated.

🎪🧯🪜We have these total legends that lent us essential equipment that meant we had a fantastic festival setup:
𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 - lent us top quality audio visual gear, stage setup, sound and lights.
𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞-𝐢𝐬𝐦 - lent us a ute, generators, ladders and freezer space to store food prior to events
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 - those awesome stretch tenets that kept us shaded and dry at the camp and planting sites.
𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 - Provided fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐁𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞 - Have provided free of charge a defibrillator at all our events, since 2024
𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 - lent us planting tools
