🧀 Happy National Cheese Day! 🧀

And yes… cheese may have helped inspire one of the coolest tools in liver health, the FibroScan! 👀

Back in the early 2000s, French researchers were experimenting with ultrasound technology and discovered something surprising: soft things and hard things vibrate differently when sound waves pass through them.

Kind of like the difference between poking a wheel of brie 🧀 and a block of parmesan 🧀 one is soft and squishy, the other is firm and stiff!

That discovery led to the invention of the FibroScan, a quick, painless scan that measures liver stiffness. Why does that matter? Because when the liver becomes damaged or scarred (fibrosis), it gets stiffer over time.

Before FibroScan, many people needed a liver biopsy to check for liver damage. The FibroScan changed the game by making liver checks faster, safer and much less invasive.

Today, FibroScan helps people living with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease and other liver conditions understand their liver health in just minutes, no cheese required 😉🧀

This week, Hepatitis Queensland was proud to attend the launch of 2026 Queensland Philanthropy Week at Parliament House.

Our CEO, Anna Hawkes, joined organisations and community leaders from across the state to celebrate the incredible impact philanthropy has in strengthening Queensland communities.

We’re also excited to share that Hepatitis Queensland will receive grant funding to support the development of our new strategic plan, an important step in shaping the future of our work and in continuing to support people affected by viral hepatitis and liver disease across Queensland.

It was a fantastic evening of connection, collaboration and shared commitment to creating healthier and more equitable communities. Thank you to everyone involved in making the launch such a meaningful event.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re proud to stand alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as we reflect, listen, learn and take action together.

The 2026 theme, All In, is a reminder that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility - not something we watch from the sidelines, but something we actively commit to every day.

At Hepatitis Queensland, we know better health outcomes are built through trust, truth-telling, connection and culturally safe care. We remain committed to walking alongside community, amplifying First Nations voices, and supporting healthier futures for all Queenslanders.

This week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about our shared histories, celebrate the strength and resilience of First Nations peoples, and consider the role we each play in reconciliation.

Because real change happens when we’re all in.

Yesterday, the ABC Brisbane shared the powerful story of Dave and Grace, a story of resilience, stigma, survival and love. Dave’s experience living with viral hepatitis and liver cancer is also a reminder of why this work matters so deeply.

Dave and Grace are proud members of Hepatitis Queensland’s LEAN (Lived Experience Advisory Network), helping to ensure the voices of people directly impacted by hepatitis are at the centre of advocacy, education and system change. Their courage in sharing their story helps break down stigma and encourages others to seek testing, treatment and care.

This lived-living experience story puts a human face to the findings in the Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer Queensland Report developed by Hepatitis Queensland and the Cancer Council Queensland. Released on 29 April, the report reveals liver cancer deaths in Queensland have more than tripled since the 1980s.

As highlighted in the report, Queensland has a clear opportunity to reduce highly preventable liver cancer through earlier testing, improved access to treatment, and culturally safe care for communities most impacted.

We are incredibly grateful to Dave and Grace for sharing their journey and standing alongside us in this work. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners, communities and lived experience leaders to create real change across Queensland.

An alarming new report has found liver cancer deaths have risen from 1.6 deaths per 100,000 people in the 1980s to 5.1 per 100,000 in 2018–2022.

Queensland has a clear opportunity to reduce one of our most preventable cancers.

Our new Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer Queensland Report, developed in partnership with Cancer Council Queensland, reveals a “clear opportunity” to reduce liver cancer by improving access to hepatitis testing, treatment and ongoing care.

The report highlights the growing impact of liver cancer across Queensland, particularly for communities experiencing barriers to healthcare including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people in regional and remote areas, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and people in custodial settings.

At Hepatitis Queensland, we know we already have the tools to prevent, manage and treat viral hepatitis, now it’s about working together to ensure nobody misses out on care.

We’re looking forward to continuing this important work alongside our partners, communities, health services and people with lived experience to improve liver health outcomes for all Queenslanders.
