🌳FEATURE FRIDAY: Little Lick Creek Restoration🌳On Feature Fridays, we feature PCC’s conservation projects. Today, we highlight one of PCC’s stream restoration projects in Durham, NC.

Grove Park, a lake and golf course community in eastern Durham, is affected by upstream development, channel straightening, and timbering, which have caused significant sedimentation in the tributaries. This project aims to restore 6,000 linear feet of stream along unnamed tributaries to Little Lick Creek in Durham, within the Falls Lake and Neuse River Basins. The project, located in the Grove Park community, will create a stable, natural system with improved aquatic habitat and reduce sediment loading to the impaired Little Lick Creek and Falls Lake. Riparian buffers will be vegetated and protected through a conservation easement.

A lot of PCC’s projects on stream stabilization utilizes riparian buffers as a conservation strategy, but what are riparian buffers?

Riparian buffers are vegetation that are planted along streams. A combination of native plants, shrubs, and/or trees are planted and used as natural buffers. These plants absorb excess nutrients from runoff, preventing pollutants from entering the streams. The plants help slow water currents and their roots stabilize the soils along the stream, preventing erosion. They also provide habitat and food for aquatic species in the streams. These benefits prove that riparian buffers are an effective stream conservation technique.

🌳FEATURE FRIDAY: College Branch Stream Restoration🌳On Feature Fridays, we feature PCC’s conservation projects. Today, we highlight one of PCC’s stream restoration projects in Guilford County, NC.

The Downtown Greenway Phase 4 transformed an urban waterway by restoring its natural functions and creating a community asset. The project helped restore the ecosystem by regrading banks, adding in-stream structures, and planting native plants to restore natural flow and stabilize the shoreline. Stream flow was improved by removing debris and reinforcing outfalls to restore the stream's natural flow patterns. Interpretive signs and workshops with local schools will turn the greenway into an outdoor classroom, promoting community and education. A five-year monitoring program and continuous maintenance by the City and Action Greensboro ensures the greenway's long-term health and community access.
