The Victorian government’s car rego rebate offer went live this morning — and the sign-up website promptly crashed.

Motorists will be able to claim back 20 per cent of their rego fees from today until July 31, under a scheme intended to reduce cost-of-living pressures.

Registration for a single car in Victoria currently costs about $930 a year, meaning drivers who apply for a whole-year rebate will receive $186 back.

Each applicant can register for a rebate for up to two cars.

The rebate is not automatic. Motorists must apply through Services Victoria to get their money back.

An error notice on the Service Victoria web site told visitors this morning there had been technical issues and to “please try again later”.
