'The Bend' strives to create a precinct that is visually, socially and economically vibrant and to make sure any future development of the area puts the community front and centre. If that makes no sense at all read on : )
The Bend in the Road as a community organisation (The Bend team) is a volunteer group of local residents and businesses passionate about a stretch of Scarborough Beach Road. Th
e group aims to create this stretch of road and the surrounding residential area into a place that is colourful, quirky and buzzing. The group want to build on existing assets of the area - like the relaxed coastal vibe and growing number of independent small businesses. The Bend in the Road as a location is primarily the stretch of Scarborough Beach Road that includes four business strips located from St Brigids Tce in Doubleview to Westview St in Scarborough (The Bend stretch). The Bend stretch incorporates a distinct bend, centred on Hancock St, and lies within the Scarborough Beach Rd West Activity Corridor (Activity Corridor). There are big plans for future development of the Activity Corridor and The Bend team strives to ensure that development occurs in an evidence based and coordinated manner that places 'community' front and centre. The Bend in the Road as a location also extends to include the residences and businesses that feed into and from the vibrancy of The Bend stretch (i.e. The Bend precinct extends from Huntriss Rd east, Ewen St south, Deanmore Rd West and Sackville Tce north (noting that The Bend team are very friendly to and inclusive of close neighbours too). The Bend in the Road as a community includes The Bend team and the fabulous bunch of ‘Bend’ residents and business owners of The Bend stretch and precinct. The Bend team has been reaching out to the rest of the The Bend community to create an area that is visually, socially and economically vibrant. Projects and events that have been implemented over the last three years include: Installation of planter boxes; Outdoor movie nights; Neighbourhood Sundowner events; Pole painting project; Munro Reserve art competition; Bend Connections; Micro grants with much more to come!
