🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning

As we continue looking back at the milestones that have shaped Lindamood-Bell, we move into the early 1990s and an important step in our growth.

📍 1992: First Learning Center outside of San Luis Obispo opens in Sacramento, California

Six years after Lindamood-Bell was founded, we expanded beyond our San Luis Obispo roots with the opening of a Learning Center in Sacramento.

This milestone marked the beginning of Lindamood-Bell’s expansion into new communities, bringing our one-to-one, individualized approach to instruction to more students and families.

From one location in San Luis Obispo to Learning Centers across the country and beyond, our commitment to changing lives through learning has remained at the heart of what we do.

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning
As we continue looking back at the milestones that have shaped Lindamood-Bell, we’re returning to where it all began.

📖 1986: Nanci Bell publishes Visualizing and Verbalizing®

The same year Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes was founded, co-founder Nanci Bell published Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking®, introducing a groundbreaking method to develop concept imagery, the ability to create an imaged gestalt from language.

The program grew from Nanci’s work with students who could read words but struggled to understand, remember, and think critically about what they read. She recognized that these students often had difficulty creating mental imagery for language, an underlying sensory-cognitive function important for comprehension.

Visualizing and Verbalizing® remains central to our approach to developing language comprehension and higher-order thinking skills.

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning

This year marks a very special milestone for Lindamood-Bell: 40 years!
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking back at some of the milestones that have shaped our story. From our beginnings in 1986 to the work we do today, there is so much to celebrate.

And where better to begin than at the beginning?

📷 1986: Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes is founded.

Pat Lindamood and Nanci Bell co-founded Lindamood-Bell with a shared belief that all students can be taught to read to their potential. From the beginning, our approach was grounded in the understanding that reading is a sensory-cognitive process and that the underlying skills can be developed.

What began 40 years ago has grown into a journey we’re excited to revisit and share with you.

Follow along as we celebrate 40 years of changing lives through learning and look back at the milestones that brought us here.

The Reading Wars Must End Part 2 | Lindamood-Bell

We’re continuing our four-part video series from a recent presentation by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, author of Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing®.

In this second clip, Nanci explores the role of symbol imagery (SI) in the component skills involved in reading and discusses the SI Test as a predictor of reading skill.

How does the ability to visualize letters and words connect to reading development? And where does symbol imagery fit alongside skills such as phonemic awareness and decoding?

We’re sharing a four-part video series from a recent presentation by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, author of Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing®.

The Reading Wars Must End is especially timely as educators continue to navigate different approaches to reading instruction and questions about how students learn to read.

In this first clip, “The Interplay of Reading,” Nanci looks at the history of the “reading wars,” including synthetic and analytic phonics, and the processes that work together in skilled reading.

This is the first of four clips we’ll be sharing. Follow us to catch the rest of the series.

Helping students build stronger literacy skills before they begin secondary school can make a lasting difference.

We're proud to support Barbados' Summer Learning Pods, part of the Ministry of Education Transformation's National Literacy Programme. Students are strengthening reading, spelling, and comprehension through instruction using the Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing® programmes, while educators receive coaching and ongoing support to help sustain these evidence-based practices in classrooms.

We're proud to be part of Barbados' inspiring effort to strengthen literacy for students across the country! 📚✏️

Barbados Today recently highlighted the Summer Learning Pods, part of the Ministry of Education Transformation's ongoing literacy initiative in partnership with Lindamood-Bell for Schools. The article showcases the encouraging progress students are making through instruction using the Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing® programs.

As Lindamood-Bell Project Consultant Isabel Medellin shared, "Within just barely three weeks, he has gone from struggling to decode words... to now he can take on two-syllable words and decode them back to back."

We're honoured to be part of this important work, helping students develop the learning abilities that support lifelong literacy and academic success.

A targeted summer literacy programme is delivering early gains for primary school leavers flagged in this year’s Common Entrance results, as education officials respond to a sharp fall in English scores and concerns about readiness for secondary school.

Forty years ago, we set out with a belief that every child can learn to read when given the right tools.

Since then, we've witnessed the impossible become possible. Children once told they would “never be good readers” becoming fluent. Students finding confidence as they decode, comprehend, and even fall in love with books. Families moving from fear to relief to joy, sometimes in just weeks.

When we founded Lindamood-Bell in 1986, the science was still emerging. We built our work on the idea that reading is sensory-cognitive, that the brain must see and feel language to truly understand it.

Forty years later, the science is catching up. And we are still here, watching minds change one learner at a time.

Enjoy a look at Lindamood-Bell today, along with some special throwback photos of co-founders Patricia Lindamood and Nanci Bell! Learn more about our journey at the link. https://bit.ly/4tTRtzU
