Yesterday the NSW Opposition lodged amendments to dilute the Minn’s Government (Good Character at Sentencing) Bill 2026 Reforms which would see the “good character” references often put forward when a killer is sentenced, removed.

Homicide Victims' Support Group (Aust) Ltd (HVSG) have long lobbied for this important reform which is designed to strengthen the protection of victims and see appropriate penalties for the perpetrator.

The Opposition want this limited to sexual offences only, meaning that in the instance of a homicide, the killer would still be able to place advocates on the stand to provide testimonials of support for the killer’s “good character”. And allow the courts the discretion to consider this testimony a mitigating factor when sentencing.

As Martha Jabour, CEO of HVSG said : "Homicide leaves families with a life sentence of grief. The justice system must not dilute accountability through subjective praise of the perpetrator.

When courts give weight to personal endorsements they risk sidelining the voices that matter most – those of the victims."

The Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Amendment (Good Character at Sentencing) Bill 2026 must be passed with no amendments.

Light will win.
The Homicide Victims' Support Group acknowledges today's National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

We join the nation in lighting a candle and observing a minute’s silence at 7.01pm to honour those who lost their lives and to stand with the families, friends and communities forever changed.

The HVSG continues to walk alongside families of all homicide victims, providing care, advocacy and connection - including through Grace's Place, our world-first residential trauma centre for children and young people impacted by homicide.

Our thoughts are with all who are grieving today.
We remember. We are with you.

Vale Professor Dame Marie Bashir AC CVO

Today the Execuitve and Board of the Homicide Victims' Support Group honour the life of Professor Dame Marie Bashir - a trailblazer, humanitarian and one of Australia’s most respected public figures.

As the first woman and second longest-serving Governor of New South Wales, she reshaped what leadership could look like: compassionate, principled and deeply connected to community.

We were honoured by her support of our work.

She was not only admired - she was deeply loved. By colleagues, by communities, and by generations who saw in her a role model of integrity, kindness and service.

We are saddened by her passing. Her legacy will endure.

The Federal and NSW Governments have declared Sunday 21 December a Day of Reflection to honour the victims of the horrific terrorist attack at Bondi Beach and to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.

The Day of Reflection will be observed on the final full day of Chanukah, a time traditionally associated with light, faith and resilience, making the loss felt by the Jewish community even more profound.

On Sunday, flags on Australian and NSW Government buildings will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the lives lost and the grief shared across the country.

All Australians share in this grief.

People across the country are invited to light a candle at 6:47pm, exactly one week since the attack unfolded, as a quiet act of remembrance with family, friends or loved ones. Australians are also invited to observe a minute of silence at 6:47pm.

Tribute to Ken Marslew AM

The Board and CEO of Homicide Victims' Support Group (Aust) Ltd express our deepest condolences on the passing of Ken Marslew AM, a tireless advocate, a courageous voice for victims, and a leader whose life’s work transformed countless others.

As the founder of Enough is Enough Anti Violence Movement Inc., Ken was a pioneering force in Australia’s victim-advocacy landscape. His determination to create safer, more compassionate communities reshaped public conversations around violence, restorative justice and healing. Through offender programs, counselling services, education initiatives and community outreach, Ken championed the belief that meaningful change is possible when courage and compassion meet action.

Ken devoted his life to standing with those affected by violence, ensuring they were seen, heard and supported. His work challenged systems, influenced policy and provided pathways to rehabilitation, accountability and hope.

His legacy endures in the survivors empowered by his advocacy, the families strengthened by his compassion, and the communities inspired by his vision of a kinder, more responsible society.

We honour Ken for his extraordinary contribution and acknowledge the profound loss felt across the victim-support sector and beyond.

Our thoughts are with his wife Lynette, his family, friends and all who were touched by his remarkable life of service.

May he rest in peace.
