Have you seen this artwork created by our scouts?

A while ago we worked with the Donnybrook Arts and Crafts Group to learn about local native orchids and clay work. Over several weeks cubs made clay orchids and painted their tiles for the display.

It’s now up between Donnybrook Medical Service and Clinipath complex on Marmion Street if you want to check it out in real life

🧑‍🍳 campfire cooking- trialling campfire cookies

And of course everyone’s favourite- marshmallows!

All the old favourite scouting ditties got some lively airtime. Any guesses on which song our scouts were singing in this photo?

Over the past few weeks our scouts have been learning about the most important part of camps and hikes- the food!

They have learnt about lightweight camp cooking crafting delicious dinners, hearty breakfasts and warming snacks to ensure they are well fed to meet any challenge on a full belly.

We have learnt about creating balanced menus to suit various dietary requirements, considering weight, availability and storage of ingredients in a backpack to settle on selecting the most appropriate options from our local IGA.

They are now expert camp chefs so we expect an interesting meal on their next adventure!

A busy ANZAC weekend for our Scout Group.

After joining the Donnybrook RSL for the local parade and service where the paracord wreath they made together last week was laid, the group headed out on an adventure. Working towards higher stages they completed an overnight hike to Gibraltar Rock which felt like a fitting destination given the military importance of the other Gibraltar and our timing.

Together they navigated through challenging overgrown country while carrying loaded packs. A first for many, they arrived at camp just after sunset and set up tents then were provided their “WWI rations” for dinner. The canned corn beef and hard tack was met with varying responses! 🎒 🧭

Since we did activate pack modern food they set about cooking a nutritious dinner on hike stoves to enjoy around the campfire. 🔥

Before setting off for the second day of walking, Evelyn played the Last Post on trumpet echoing off the rock creating quite the commemorative atmosphere to set the scene for the day. 🎺

Continuing on the scouts learnt about the vegetation and wildlife we passed (the birds, so many 🐦 ) plus gaining an understanding of things they found along the way like reference trees. They practiced tracking their progress (how much further?)and adjusted the plans to make sure everyone was comfortable - or at least happy.😃

Overall it was a successful adventure with many outdoor skills completed and competencies demonstrated at all levels of progression. We are so proud of the achievement and commitment shown by the scouts during the hike.

Our hall is getting a facelift!

Thanks to a much appreciated allocation in the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup budget we have had some essential repairs and maintenance works done to improve safety and take care of our old building to continue as our home base for years to come.

Until the works are completed and order restored at the hall our regular program is on hold. But dont worry we are still working behind the scenes to organise some exciting events for this significant year ahead.

🏕️ 🏕️ 🔥 🪵🎒 ⛰️ 🚲 🏄‍♂️ 🛶 🤿 🧗 🏊‍♀️ ⛺️ ⛺️

For those wanting to sign their kids up to the most adventurous, fun and rewarding program in town get in touch and further info will be coming soon.

Or for any adults looking for a challenge, friendship and fun we are in need of more helpers- from years work to teaching kids new skills we have plenty of opportunities to give back!

Today marks the end of our 2025 scouting journey.

After assisting at the Lions Club of Donnybrook Christmas Carols 🎶 over the weekend we visited Tuia Lodge Donnybrook to visit with the residents.

🤶 Scouts delivered handmade Christmas Cards and gingerbread decorations to all. After introductions the kids joined in games and chats with all.

What a fun way to end the year spreading some Christmas cheer! 🎄 🎄 🎄

Today our cubs learnt about reading maps, particularly using contour lines to understand what terrain they would come up against and how to use that in planning adventures.

✍️ They started by mapping contour lines with layers of a physical playdough mountain, then practiced making sculptures from contour drawings and finally predicted contour maps from a landscape relief drawing ⛰️ ⛰️

Really building on their core Outdoor Bushwalking skills the cubs used some maps to calculate what adjustments to a base walking speed speed they would need to consider on plans for an upcoming walk. ⌚️ Turns out they think it will take about 6-7 hours to complete 🤦🏻‍♀️

What’s the link between mirrors and marshmallows?
This week our cubs and scouts engaged with fire. We looked at safety equipment and checked our gear around the hall, tried lighting fire with different methods from the traditional matches, more challenging flint and steel and even attempted using mirrors and magnifying glasses. Scouts trialled various materials to see how they would burn and what would help get a fire going or sustained in a survival situation.
It was all rounded out by the best bit of scouting roasting marshmallows over the fires they created.
