Food Co-op ingredient spotlight: Za'atar spice mix!

Za’atar (pronounced Zaah-tar) is most identified with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. Za'atar is generally a combination of dried oregano, thyme, (woodsy and floral), with sumac (tangy and acidic) and toasted sesame seeds (nutty and rich). It's a bit of a 'put it on everything' pantry essential. Great to flavour proteins, veggies or mix through cooked grains. See our recipe for Middle Eastern Roasted Vegetables!

You view this recipe and more in our Newsletter accessible via the link to our website below or collect a hard copy from various locations around Okines and the Southern Beaches: https://okinescommunityhouse.org.au/community-house/okines-newsletter/

You can find our za'atar spice blend in the co-op:
Tuesdays 10am - 4pm
Fridays 9:30am - 1:30pm
Sundays 9:30am - 1:30pm

Community Pantry is on today from 1:30pm - 4pm and everyone is welcome!

Tracey made a yummy stew and Vicki's focaccia is fresh out of the oven for lunch. Alongside our regular grocery items we have dog bones kindly donated by Carl, and Donna and the garden team have pea seedlings for people to take home too.

Community Pantry runs every Wednesday 1:30-4pm here at Okines Community House thanks to Tahana and our amazing volunteers Tracey, Vicki, Rhonda, Katrina and Annette as well as Linley who collects the food from Sorell Country Fresh Market each week. Thanks team!!

We hope to see you there! Everyone is welcome. 😊

With mini computers in most of our pockets, who uses calculators anymore, anyway? the Okines Food Co-op, that's who! And ours just died, so we are putting the call out for any working calculators that have been abandoned in a drawer, to come have a useful new life at the Co-op. If you have one to donate, please drop it in. Thanks very much!!

Food Co-op ingredient spotlight: cacao nibs!

Made from cacao beans, cacao nibs are harvested, dried, fermented, and cracked to produce smaller, darker pieces. They're extremely nutrient-dense - providing a good source of fibre, protein, and healthy fats and rich in minerals, including iron and magnesium. Make sure you open the jar and smell the deep, almost wine-like aroma! The flavour is rich, slightly bitter and tangy and they’re an easy swap out for chocolate chips. Enjoy this recipe for cacao and date bliss balls!

Pop into the Food Co-op for your ingredients:
Tuesdays 10am - 4pm
Fridays 9.30am - 1:30pm
Sundays 9:30am - 1:30pm
