We’re proud to see Blue Light Victoria featured in The Age as we celebrate 50 years of supporting young people across Victoria. 💙
The article looks back at where it all began—the first Blue Light disco in Mooroolbark in 1976—and shares some wonderful memories from the volunteers and communities that made the discos such a Victorian institution.
It also explores how Blue Light Victoria has evolved. While discos continue to bring young people, volunteers and police together in communities such as Sunbury, our work now extends into schools and one-to-one mentoring—supporting young people’s physical, mental and social wellbeing and helping build positive relationships with police and emergency services.
As our CEO Elissa Scott explains in the article, young people’s voices remain central to everything we do. Our programs are designed, tested and evaluated to respond to what young people need today.
The full article may require a subscription, but its message is clear: the way we deliver our work may have changed over five decades, but our purpose remains the same—creating safe, positive opportunities for young people to connect, build confidence and thrive.
Thank you to journalist Gemma Grant and The Age for sharing our story, and to the generations of volunteers, staff, police members, partners and supporters who have been part of Blue Light Victoria’s first 50 years.
We’re excited about what the next 50 years will bring.
