Strong communities start in Neighbourhood Houses. We're asking the Victorian Government to support stronger communities by ensuring access to the social connection and wellbeing our sector provides through:
💛 Restoring and maintaining Neighbourhood House funding
🩵 Support 25 Neighbourhood Houses who do not currently receive any ongoing funding
🩷 Develop a fund for the establishment of 5 additional Neighbourhood Houses in Victoria’s growth areas annually

The State Government’s neighbourhood house funding program was designed to cover the cost of a manager and operational costs. The funding has not kept up with inflation, and now fails to cover the cost of employing a Manager for the mandatory opening hours, let alone the additional costs.

92% of these funded positions are filled by women, who are now under extreme pressure to cut corners or volunteer their time in the workplace. They are doing unpaid labour to cover the lack of funding for this essential community service.

We don't want programs to end, but we can't allow the stress of this to fall on the women doing the work for our communities. There is a simple solution - Increase NHCP funding by 25%.

A new report by Ending Loneliness Together found that half of the people living in Australia are experiencing some form of social disconnection. The same report found that attending community events reduces the risk of loneliness and social isolation by 89%.

Neighbourhood Houses are community connectors, hosts of exactly the type of community events that offer that necessary connection. We are already providing the solution - it's essential that we can continue doing so.

Years of underfunding mean too many Houses are operating with limited staff and stretched resources — despite growing demand and a rise in complex safety issues, including mental health crises and instances of violence. Houses are being forced to cut open hours, reduce programs, or fundraise just to turn on the lights.

Unless government acts, more doors will close — and communities will lose trusted, safe and inclusive spaces they rely on every day.

This petition urgently calls for the Victorian Government to:
💙Restore funding in real terms for Neighbourhood Houses through a 25% increase
💛Fund the 25 Neighbourhood Houses that do not currently receive any ongoing funding
💗Develop a fund for the establishment of 20 additional Neighbourhood Houses in growth areas
