It's National Reconciliation Week 27th May - 3rd June.
Reconciliation is something we all have a role in, not just this week, but in the choices, conversations, and actions we take every day.

At playgroup, we believe every child and family deserves to feel respected, valued, and connected. We recognise that meaningful change takes commitment from all of us.

A new article from The Conversation Australia + NZ highlights an important message for anyone working to improve children's mental health: start by supporting their parents and caregivers.

The research found that factors such as parental mental health, financial stress, housing instability, and social isolation can have a significant impact on children's long-term wellbeing.

That's why places where families can connect, access support, and build confidence matter.

At playgroup, we see every day how regular opportunities for connection can help families feel less isolated and more supported. While playgroup is known for its benefits to children's development, it also provides something equally valuable: a place for parents and caregivers to feel part of a community.

Supporting children's mental health starts with supporting the people raising them.

Read the article:

Long-term data shows children are more likely to develop mental health issues when their parents experience financial stress and housing instability.

Confidence doesn’t always look loud or obvious.

Sometimes it’s a child taking a few steps away from you.
Sometimes it’s giving something new a go.
Sometimes it’s trying again, even when it’s not easy.

These are the moments where confidence begins, quietly building over time.

Micro-milestones we see at playgroup every day

It’s easy to focus on the big milestones like first words, first steps, or starting kindergarten. But at playgroup, we see the small ones too. The moments that quietly build confidence and connection over time.

🧸 Sharing a toy
🙂 Smiling or laughing with another child
👋 Saying hello or waving goodbye
📖 Joining in group activities (even briefly)
✨ Trying a new activity

These moments might seem small, but they’re big steps in how children connect, learn, and grow.

In those early days with young children, getting out of the house can feel like a lot. Packing the bag, timing naps, just making it out the door.

Whether you make it to playgroup once a week or once a fortnight, that’s something.

It’s a chance to get out, to let your child explore, and to take a small step into something new, at your own pace.

What does following your child’s lead look like?

It’s not about planning the activity or showing them what to do.

It’s noticing what they’re drawn to, giving them space to explore, and joining in rather than directing.

Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting nearby, watching, and letting them show you how they want to play.

At playgroup, there’s space for this to happen naturally, through play, curiosity, and connection.

Children don’t need to arrive knowing how to share.

Playgroup is where they begin to learn these skills, through play, with support and time.

With guidance and real-life interactions, children gradually start to understand turn-taking, patience, and how to play alongside others.

Playgroup Australia commends the Federal Government for its focus on early childhood care, education and programs in this Budget.

In particular, we welcome the overall 12% funding boost to Commonwealth programs that support children and families, as part of the new Child and Family Support Program.

The playgroup movement across Australia delivers incredibly impactful programs through this funding that increase child and parental capacity and wellbeing, strengthen community cohesion and creates links to important social and health services.

We look forward to continuing to deliver our vision for every child, every family, everywhere learning and connecting through playgroup.

We all just want to raise happy and kind little humans 💜

Playgroups offer a safe haven for children and their families to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, even if just for a morning. They provide an opportunity to play games, sing songs, and solve puzzles together. It’s not just about the children playing; it’s also about parents and carers engaging with them and socialising with other adults in the community.

Playgroup is your village 💜
It’s the place where you find familiar faces, shared experiences, and support when you need it most.

For children, it’s play, discovery, and friendship.
For parents, it’s connection, conversation, and community.

Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as showing up.

Tell us about your village
What helps you feel connected and supported?
