Loss of another local koala in Delungra. 😪
On the 15th Feb, a koala was spotted in Delungra township.
Only young, tired very easily, loss of weight was very noticeable from behind, mucky bottom, seemed to lack strength and a little unstable.
WIRES was called. We stayed with the koala until our lovely WIRES volunteer Tanya arrived who agreed that the koala was not in good condition and needed medical attention.
The koala was transported to the koala hospital in Lismore to be assessed, treated & cared for.
We now know this was a young female koala.
She had pneumonia, heart problems and her intestine had previously been punctured due to trauma and was still healing. Low temp. Low glocose and emaciated. Unsure of the Chlamydia status.
We received notification on 18th Feb that she was put to sleep. These decisions are never made lightly, especially with an animal that is rapidly declining in numbers.
If you see one of these beautiful animals getting around and something looks abit off. Please call WIRES on 1300 094 737.
Even if you find a deceased koala, please call WIRES as the dead koala could just save another ones life.
If you are interested in perhaps attending a short information night on koalas eg
What to look for in a sick koala.
How can a deceased koala help a live one.
What a healthy koala looks like.
Please leave us a message and if there is enough interest, we will discuss organising one.
Please share this post with our local area.
Thanks for reading, Leah.
