Wildwood Landcare Group Inc

Wildwood Landcare Group Inc we are a newly formed group aiming to restore and enhance Deloraine's Wildwood for the use of the community. Numerous native fauna inhabit the area.

The Deloraine Wildwood Landcare Group aim is to improve the physical landscape, encourage wildlife habitat and foster community involvement , rehabilitating The 14 acre flood plain bordering the Meander River accessed via the Deloraine caravan Park The Wildwood is a 14 acre flood plain bordering the Meander River and recently purchased by the Meander Valley Council from the Rotary Club of Delorain

e. Although badly degraded there are remnants of native vegetation including myrtle, blackwood, native grasses, reeds, and a recently identified threatened species - fragrant h**p bush. Our plans and aims are to revegetate the riparian zone with suitable natives to help with stabilization and flood control, re-establish the frog ponds which drained out after the last major flood, provide native habitat and control weeds. This also extends to controlling willow and sycamore infestations. A ten-year Master Plan, with accompanying vegetation map has been developed, and will guide future restorative work to be carried out by Group members.

Our monthly working bee is this Saturday the 20th of June at 10am
On your way check out the new signs for Wildwood and Landcare..... Thank you Meander Valley Council!!!!

This weekend we're sticking plants in the ground! After all the hard work mulching, weeding and clearing, it's time to do what we've been waiting all year for.

After a soggy week, the forecast for Saturday is looking good. We have a nice selection of natives (tea trees, banksias, correas, pepperberry, bottlebrush) to plant in the mulched areas. You may have noticed in the Wildwood, we're trialling a new system for young plants. The taller stakes and guards prevent possums from using our guards as ladders and munching the new growth. The stakes are also flexible, allowing the plants to grow a naturally stronger trunk to withstand the wind when the stakes are removed.

We will have some equipment but all extra spades will be most appreciated. Please also bring hats, gloves and sturdy footwear.

We'll be meeting at 10am at the front gate, accessed via the Deloraine Caravan Park, near our fabulous new signs.

We look forward to seeing you there. All very much welcome.

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to announce that Deloraine Wildwood Landcare Group will be hosting another citizen science spectacular this Saturday the 25th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

This event, the City Nature Challenge, will run in a similar format to the BioBlitz we held in October. The aim is to gather observations over the weekend and contribute this data to the scientific community, helping to build a clearer picture of local biodiversity.

Coordinated by committee member Michelle, the afternoon will offer a great opportunity to gain deeper insight into the natural environment of our own wild patch here in Deloraine. We’ll also be joined by special guests from the scientific community, who will assist with species identification and be available to answer questions. Members of the Wildwood Landcare Group will be there as well if you have any Wildwood-related queries.

Everyone is welcome, and we look forward to seeing you there. The official write-up is attached below.
Kind regards,
Michael Kennedy
Wildwood Landcare Group

Hi everyone,

Just letting you know that our monthly working bee is on this Saturday the 18th. April.

This weekend we'll be doing some work around the Myrtle Tree area and also continuing with some general weeding/clearing.

The weather forecast is looking good! A cool morning but nice and sunny. We'll be starting our winter hours of 10am-12pm for Working Bees from here on. It should be a lovely day to get out and enjoy the sycamores starting to go to sleep for another winter.

Thank you again for all your valuable help.

The meeting point is at the front gate, accessed via the Caravan Park at 10am.

PS. You may have noticed that we recently replanted an area along the riverbank. This was washed out in the last flood and we've had to divert the track due to safety concerns. The plantings we've done are to help stabilise the bank so hopefully less of it will get washed away in the future. We'll be putting some more plants in over time. If you have any questions about the track diversion, feel free to ask us here, or at the Working Bee.

Wildwood Landcare Group Update

The dedicated committee and volunteers have not been idle.

As you walk along the river you will see that the tree plantings done earlier are going well despite the long hot dry summer.

John Tabor has been caring for the tube stock to be planted out early spring.

There has been an exciting discovery of a rare orchid and several, other endangered flora hidden among the weeds.

Over summer we have been focusing on clearing invasive weeds, sycamore, elderberry and thistles in areas surrounding groves of native trees and shrubs.

Many will have noticed the collection of branches and felled sycamore’s along part of the walk. Don’t worry. This is very temporary as they will be chipped and used to mulch the areas where we plan our next plantings to extend and eventually protect the original native groves.

We would love to have you join us at our monthly working bee. 10 am - 12 on the 3rd Saturday of the month. We encourage families to be involved, kids very welcome. The next working bee is on 18th April.

Congratulations to Peter Hansen from the Wildwood Landcare Group for being awarded the Meander Valley Council Stewardship Award ! It was a beautiful event held by MVC, welcoming new Australians, celebrating our amazing local volunteers and also remembering those recently lost in the Bondi tragedy.

Some info about Peter for those of you who aren't aware:
Peter was the founding president of the Wildwood Landcare Group, which is restoring and enhancing Deloraine's Wildwood. He has built the membership, led development of a masterplan, liaised with council and sponsors, represented WLG in seminars and workshops around the state, and worked tirelessly on the site.
Peter inspires with his leadership - stepping up to help form the WLG, and taking on any task required. He inspires with his engagement, always consulting with all parties, promoting our activities, and producing monthly newsheets. He inspires with his participation - attending every working bee, and cheerfully welcoming new volunteers.

Congratulations, Peter! Professional photos to come.

Just a reminder that this weekend (Saturday 25th October), the Deloraine Wildwood will be participating in a very special event; The Great Southern Bioblitz 2025!

The Great Southern BioBlitz is an exciting global event all about encouraging our community to explore and record nature in full springtime bloom across the Southern Hemisphere.

Everyone is welcome (children will need a supervising adult) and no experience is necessary.

This will be a great way to increase our knowledge of all the flora & fauna and general biodiversity in our special patch. The data collected will then be available via the iNaturalist app.

We are very grateful to have experts Simon Fearn & John Douglas from QVMAG, as well as local naturalists Sarah Lloyd and Michael Heazlewood attending, who can help us with identifying what we find and sharing their knowledge. We will also have volunteers present who can help you get set up on your phone with the iNaturalist app but if you would like to install it ahead of time and sign up for an account, that will obviously mean you can hit the ground running.

The event will run from 10am-12pm but please try to arrive ~15 minutes early so we can have a briefing and get everyone signed up. We will then be inviting people to BYO a picnic lunch for afterwards, so we can share our findings and discuss the morning.

It looks like the rain is now easing off, so as long as the Wildwood isn't under water, it should be a lovely day for it!

Parking is in the gravel area near the entrance to Wildwood, which is where we will also be meeting up.

If you have any questions, please feel free to message here, or phone/message the coordinator superstar Michelle during business hours on 0423 193 133.

Thanks and hope to see you there!

Just a reminder that our monthly working bee in the Deloraine WIldwood is on again this coming Saturday 20th.
After an amazing planting effort last month and spring truly springing, we're back to our old friends, the sycamores and other woody weeds.
We will be needing some help to help clear the new growths before they get a chance to establish. We're making good ground on these invaders and our working bees make a massive difference in getting the Wildwood closer to our vision.

All are welcome and if you have any preferred tools for digging out stubborn saplings, please feel free to bring them along. As tempting as it may be, flamethrowers are not advised.

Kickoff is at 10am and we'll be meeting at the front entrance gate as per usual, at the end of the caravan park.

Just had a walk in Wildwood after the recent flooding. The trees in the backgound had about a meter of water over them without any visable damage and the mulch is still there.
