Lest we forget

Tomorrow marks the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of hostilities in the Second World War with the surrender of Japan to the Allied forces in 1945.

VP Day is an important time for Australia to recognise the sacrifices so many people made for the freedoms we enjoy today, including almost 40,000 Australians who gave their lives during the war.

Merimbula RSL sub-Branch will hold a service on 18 August 2026 at 1100, open to all. Our sub-Branch will be represented by the President.

On Vietnam Veterans’ Day (18 August), RSL NSW honours the service and sacrifice of those who served during Australia’s decade-long involvement in the Vietnam War.

Over 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973, with additional personnel from the Royal Australian Air Force returning to Vietnam in 1975 to carry out evacuations and assist refugees in the lead-up to South Vietnam's surrender.

Of those who served, 523 died, and around 3,000 were evacuated with wounds, injuries or illnesses.

This year we will specifically commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. RSL NSW invites the community to join us in recognising all who served, and in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Another great day at the Delegate RSL sub-Branch’s Kelly Pool competition for the Alan Standen Cup. Veterans from the Monaro & Far South Coast, and further afield, competed for their arm of the ADF, whilst sharing a few refreshing beverages.

The final was a thrilling event, but in the end the skill - and cunning of the DSB’s Hon Sec, Pip Ryan, playing for the RAAF, triumphed.

As usual, the day could not have been the success it was without the tireless efforts of DSB members and friends - thank you!

The day was also exciting because the power went out! But an array of
Army and Navy engineers were on hand to flash up the generator, and we were soon back in business. BZ to Essential Energy, who came out at night and fixed the offending pole.

See you all again next year!
