Community Open Day a Resounding Success

The Dayboro Men’s Shed recently held a highly successful Community Open Day that brought together approximately one hundred visitors from the Dayboro region. The centrepiece of the event was the official opening of our new extension, an important milestone for our group. We were honoured to have The Hon Nikki Boyd MP in attendance, who marked the occasion with her presence and support.

Throughout the Open Day, several of our members acted as enthusiastic tour guides, leading guests through our facilities and introducing them to our range of machinery. Visitors had the opportunity to see firsthand the diverse array of projects our members are currently working on, reflecting both the skills and creativity within our Shed community.

“Sheducation” In addition to our regular activities, Dr Rod Edwards, our Health and Welfare Officer, has introduced a series of in-house seminars focused on providing practical advice and guidance around health and wellbeing. One recent session, held in our recreation room, explored strategies for maintaining balance and fitness. The workshop was well attended, drawing not only members but also several of their partners. Dr Edwards has additional seminars planned, and further details will be published in upcoming editions of this column.

The strong attendance at our events highlights the value our members place on getting together for a chin wag and supporting each other. Regular Thursday morning coffees and breakfast for some and lunch on Shed Days—are a testament to the vibrant, social atmosphere that defines our group.

The success of our Community Open Day has led to several new members joining the Dayboro Men’s Shed, and we continue to receive enquiries from those interested in becoming involved. If you would like to learn more or are considering joining, please reach out to:

What Makes a Men’s Shed Special?

Many men encounter difficulties when discussing emotions or seeking assistance, which may contribute to diminished health, increased loneliness, and depression. Major life transitions, such as job loss or illness, can be particularly challenging to manage without support. Maintaining good health encompasses productivity, community contribution, and social engagement. Men’s Sheds provide a supportive environment where men can connect, work on projects, or unwind in a pressure-free setting. Participants hail from diverse backgrounds, all motivated by the pursuit of purposeful activity and fellowship. An effectively managed Men’s Shed fosters both community initiatives and personal interests, thereby enhancing members’ wellbeing.

At Dayboro, we invite individuals with varied interests to join our expanding Shed community. Approaching eighty members, we continue to offer ample time and space to accommodate more participants. Whether you are new to the area, possess specialized hobbies or skills—such as leatherwork or computer proficiency—or simply enjoy friendly conversation over chess, cards, or tea, we encourage you to attend on 23rd August (see notice above). We also invite you to explore our new extensions and available equipment.
