Most of our clients are really good with using a spacer (after they have seen us) but many of them forget it needs a clean!

Quick reminder of what to do:

🔹Wipe the mouthpiece with a damp cloth daily or after each use.
🔹Once a month wash the spacer in warm water and detergent.
🔹Do not rinse.
🔹Leave to air dry.
🔹Do not rub anything on the inside so you don't create static.

Manufacturers recommend changing your spacer every 12 months however dependent on use you may need to change it sooner if there are cracks or damaged valves.

Need a replacement? Pop into our office at 3 Nylander Street Parap and pick one up for the bargain price of $15.

Manage your respiratory condition with the following:

🔥Take your daily medications (if prescribed).
🔥Have a review with your GP and/or AFNT to ensure that you are using your inhalers correctly (puffer and spacer guys!)
🔥Carry your blue/grey puffer and a spacer at all times
🔥Follow your Asthma Action Plan or have it reviewed and updated
🔥Ensure everyone who has contact with your child (teachers, childcare workers) know that smoke may trigger their asthma and what they should do in such an event
🔥Too smoky outside? Minimise the amount of time spent outdoors. Close all windows inside your home, place air conditioning on recycle/recirculate and if possible, use an air purifier (HEPA) filter to reduce indoor smoke levels.
🔥If you are expected to be outside when air quality is poor, wearing a mask will reduce your exposure to smoke. This could be P2, N95, surgical or cloth masks.
🔥Know your community asthma first aid (4x4x4) in case of an emergency.
🔥Follow AFNT website or Bushfires NT page to stay updated on controlled burns in your area
🔥Follow air quality information on the AirRater app or you can check the quality of air at NTEPA

If your symptoms persist, we recommend seeing your local GP.

If you don’t already follow Bushfires NT FB page check it out here to get information on bushfires and burns in your area Bushfires NT AFNT is also putting up notices of prescribed burns so please keep an eye out so you can be prepeared for burnoffs in your area.

What is happening inside the lungs when someone has asthma symptoms?

Airways tighten up - reliever medications (blue/grey puffer ) help with this

Airways thicken up - preventer medication helps with this

Airways fill up (with mucous) - preventer medication also helps with this

Remember all of these things can and usually do happen all at the same time.

Did you know 1 in 9 people report having asthma?

This equates to 11% of the Australian population (2.8 million people).

This does not count those people who had it as a child and think they have grown out of it (spoiler alert you haven't - the symptoms may not be present now but they can return at any time).

And it also doesn't count those people that have not yet been diagnosed, the ones that are getting short of breath because they are getting older or they think they are out of shape. Just to let you know breathlessness is NOT a natural part of aging and you may be unfit but you may also have undiagnosed asthma.

If you are experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness or wheeze, please get it checked out!

See your GP and/or book with AFNT for a lung function test and education
