Rotary Club of Darwin

Rotary Club of Darwin The Rotary Club of Darwin, or RCD, was the first and remains the largest Rotary club in the NT. Our club believes in having a good time.

We were the first and remain the largest Rotary club in the Northern Territory. The Rotary Club of Darwin prides itself on contributing to local, national and international projects and sponsorships. In addition, we sponsor a number of Northern Territory awards and functions including the Police Officer of the Year, the Hugh Bradley Award for Legal Studies, the Ian MacGregor English Award, Indigen

ous Health Scholarships and the BEAT school spectacular. We also raise funds for our Rotary Youth Sports Foundation and sponsor one of our local talents, Sophie Phillips, on an important course of study at Cambridge University. In 2021-22, we intend continuing our efforts in these important areas and will explore how we might develop new projects, particularly for supporting youth, whilst continuing to fund raise for our regular commitments. In this space, we operate the famous Chocolate Wheel at the Royal Darwin Show each year as well as running the Million Dollar Hole-in-One at the Gardens Golf Course. Last year, we held the inaugural ‘Bali Vibe’ in cooperation with the Darwin Surf Life Saving Club. This is a rare Wet Season activity and was designed to allow our locals to feel like they were in Bali, but without having to travel there, given COVID travel restrictions. In recent years we have concentrated on funding various overseas projects, but with a particular emphasis on Timor Leste and we are managing a significant global grant to eradicate malaria in that nation. We continue to develop local ‘hands on’ community projects too that emphasise the heart and the mind and follow Rotary’s seven areas of focus. During the next few years, our primary focus will be on supporting our local community – assisting them to rebuild their confidence and regenerate following the global pandemic. It is important to note that we remain a men-only club, but we warmly welcome all Rotarians and visitors to our meetings. There are other mixed Rotary clubs in the Darwin area including Darwin North, Darwin South, Darwin Sunrise and Litchfield/Palmerston. Details of how to contact these clubs for a visit or membership can be found on our website below or on our page. We are famous for wearing our loud Hawaiian shirts, fishing trips and boisterous meetings. So why not come along and enjoy our hospitality on Thursday evenings at 6pm at the Novotel Atrium hotel on the Esplanade. Please note that we also enjoy many away meetings, so ensure you check with us if you are intending to visit so as to ascertain where we will be. Please feel free to learn more about us by exploring our award-winning website or find us on Facebook and enjoy what Rotary has to offer, as we do. Paul Simon
President

At last night's meeting we were very pleased to host Sophie Minchinton and her mother, Penny, to hear a bit about her journey and present her a certificate as one of our 2025 Junior Golf Scholarship awardees. Sam Rumpff from Alice Springs has also been awarded a scholarship by the RC Darwin Junior Sports Committee. Both will travel to Queensland in June-July to participate in a high performance coaching camp supported by their RC Darwin scholarships.

See more in the recent Golf Australia media release https://www.golf.org.au/rotary-scholars-named-in-nt

We look forward to hearing more of their journey as developing elite junior golfers from the NT.
