At the recent "Is There a Seafood Career for You?" workshop, delivered by the Aboriginal Sea Company, young Territorians had the opportunity to meet people working across the seafood industry and discover the many different career pathways available.

From commercial fishing to fisheries management, research and development and industry support roles, participants gained firsthand insights into the diverse opportunities the sector has to offer.

The day was filled with highlights, including meeting industry professionals, learning about career pathways, getting hands-on with NT Mud Crabs, and watching Barramundi fisher Code demonstrate the skill of gillnet making before participants tried their hand at net making themselves.

The level of engagement and interest shown by participants was fantastic to see, with plenty of questions, discussions and curiosity throughout the workshop. Opportunities like these help young people gain a better understanding of the seafood industry and the many rewarding careers it can offer.

Thank you to the Aboriginal Sea Company team, the Darwin Aquaculture Centre team John and Ashley, Lauren Thornton FRDC , Jeremy Williams Austral, Code and everyone who generously shared their time, knowledge and experiences with participants throughout the day. Fisheries NT

Hard to beat a meal like this🍽

A whole local Butterfly Snapper paired with Thai paw paw salad.

One of the great things about dining out in the NT is seeing local and NT seafood featured on menus, giving Territorians and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy fresh, quality seafood sourced from Territory waters.

Challenge accepted 🦀👏

FRDC Extension Officer, Lauren stepped up to the challenge of tying an NT Mud Crab and judging by the smile, was pretty chuffed with the outcome!

Shoes off, slacks rolled up… Territory fashion at its finest 😄

It’s always great to get hands-on and learn more about the skills, knowledge and care involved in working with one of the Territory’s iconic seafood species.

Fresh Grey Mackerel trunks being unloaded down at the Duck Pond, Darwin 🐟⚓

The seafood industry is never just one job. For many, life in seafood means wearing multiple hats, from time spent out at sea to unloading catch, preparing gear and helping keep operations moving back onshore.

It takes many different skills and a whole lot of teamwork to help bring fresh Territory seafood from our waters to local tables.

A taste of the Territory 🍽️🐟

Fresh Territory fish in the skillet, simple, local and part of what makes the NT lifestyle pretty special.

Not everyone fishes recreationally, but thanks to our commercial fishing industry, Territorians and visitors alike can enjoy quality NT seafood, whether at home or dining out.

Love your seafood? Big changes are coming to menus across Australia 🐟🦐🦀

From 1 July 2026, hospitality venues serving seafood will begin using the new AIM labelling system to help diners better understand where their seafood comes from:

🇦🇺 A = Australian
🌏 I = Imported
🔄 M = Mixed Origin

Whether it’s fish and chips by the beach, dinner with family, or enjoying fresh local seafood with friends, these new labels will make it easier to know what’s on your plate and where it comes from.

For Territorians who enjoy fresh seafood as part of the NT lifestyle, it’s a positive step towards helping consumers make informed choices and better recognise the incredible seafood produced right here in Australia 🦀

Sunrise over Territory waters 🌅

📸On the way towards the Daly River, Anson Bay - moments like this are a reminder of why so many fishers love life on the water.

It’s not always easy, early mornings, changing conditions and long days are all part of the job, but views like this and the connection to some of the NT’s most remote and beautiful places make it all worthwhile.

to 2023 📸

A memory from the Barramundi Fishery Licensee pre-season meeting, with Jo Marshall, Wellbeing Programs Manager at Seafood Industry Australia-Stay Afloat Australia and the crew from Wild Barra preparing to steam out to the fishing grounds for another season.

Before the season got underway, an important reminder was shared, looking after crew health and wellbeing is just as important as preparing for the season ahead. Long days on the water start with making sure everyone is supported, connected and looking out for one another.

A busy and enjoyable day yesterday for Dan, Tim and myself, catching up with several winners of the 2026 NT Seafood Awards as we prepare for upcoming media exposure and officially present their Award plaques. 🐟

Celebrating the achievements of our Award winners and recognising the contribution they make to the industry is always something special.

We also had the pleasure of catching up with Jane Cowna, EO of Women In Seafood Australasia - WISA, during her visit to Darwin. It was a fantastic opportunity for WISA and the Seafood Council to share insights, reflect on the journey of both organisations, and continue building strong industry connections.

Looking forward to sharing more stories from our 2026 NT Seafood Awards winners soon!
