The Connected Women Program, initiated by Red Cross in the Northern Territory in 2017, addresses the diverse challenges migrant women often encounter when adjusting to a new culture, language, and systematic structures. These women also face difficulties in navigating lifestyle expectations, raising children, and experiencing isolation due to their circumstances. Since its inception, the Connected
Women group has grown significantly, now comprising over 400 women from 45+ nationalities in Darwin and Katherine. This program centres on creating safe spaces that bring together marginalized women from culturally diverse backgrounds to share their life experiences and aspirations. It emphasizes the cultural similarities among women, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, be it Aboriginal or from the wider Australian community, rather than focusing on their differences. These safe spaces serve as access points for essential information and support, enabling women to address the challenges they face. Additionally, they provide valuable opportunities for skill development and networking, which in turn can lead to pathways for employment, effectively addressing one of the critical barriers to settlement in Australia. As women within the Connected Women group become equipped with information, knowledge, confidence, and support, their engagement in civic and workforce participation increases significantly. Each member of the Connected Women Group represents resilience and strives to build a purposeful life for herself and her family. The group actively participates in community initiatives, taking the lead in identifying and implementing various projects. Engaging in meetings and workshops, they develop skills in areas such as cooking, dressmaking, drama, and storytelling, culminating in community events like the Joy of Many Colours Fashion Show and Taste of Many Colours Food Expo. These initiatives provide not only information but also moments of fun and shared learning. Through a partnership with Connected Women, Red Cross aims to extend engagement opportunities for these women, offering training to enhance their confidence, expertise, skills, and local relationships. The increased social and cultural connections, along with meaningful volunteering opportunities, will lead to improved workforce participation and better long-term employability, contributing to Darwin's economy and culture. In particular, supporting this program will create enhanced economic participation opportunities for these women.
