HIA NT is deeply saddened by the passing of John Halikos, a highly respected Territory business leader whose influence has helped shape Darwin’s construction and development landscape. His long-standing contribution to the industry and broader community made him a widely admired figure across the NT.

The Halikos family has been a valued and trusted supporter of HIA NT for many years. Our relationship with the family—especially through our ongoing work with Tony—has always reflected their genuine commitment to strengthening the Territory’s building and construction sector. Their support as members, collaborators and advocates has played a significant role in advancing our industry here in Darwin.

John’s legacy extends well beyond his business achievements. He will be remembered for his leadership, generosity and dedication to creating opportunities for Territorians. His impact lives on in the projects he delivered, the people he supported, and the strong community spirit he helped build.

On behalf of HIA NT, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Tony, the Halikos family, their colleagues and all who had the privilege of working with John. We honour his remarkable legacy and keep his family in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Communities across the NT, especially in Katherine and the Big Rivers region, are facing severe flooding, with the Katherine River reaching its highest levels in nearly 30 years and causing widespread evacuations and service disruptions. Many homes are without power and clean water, and several remote communities have been forced to evacuate as infrastructure is impacted.

At HIA NT, our thoughts are with all our members and their families during this difficult time. While there’s little we can do directly from Darwin as emergency crews work to restore essential services, please know we are thinking of you and ready to support however we can—whether it’s sharing information, connecting you with assistance, or simply checking in.
Please stay safe, look after one another, and avoid any risks around floodwaters.

I recently visited Billy and his team, who are moving through an exciting rebrand, including a new website, updated logo, and refreshed colour scheme. The new look is modern, professional, and a great reflection of the high‑quality work they deliver.

Billy Can Construction specialise in residential renovations and have built a strong reputation for producing excellent results across Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding areas. Their dedication to quality craftsmanship and client-focused service continues to set them apart.

This week, HIA welcomed students from SEDA College NT as they commenced the Construction and Trade Program at our Berrimah Skills Centre. The program brings together secondary education and industry to create meaningful pathways for students exploring a future in building and construction.

HIA is proud to be involved in this initiative, which provides young people with exposure to the construction industry and opportunities to consider rewarding, long-term careers. With significant workforce shortages continuing to challenge the sector and limit the achievement of construction targets, programs like this play a vital role in developing the next generation of skilled workers.

We look forward to supporting these students as they progress through the program and reach key decision points in shaping their future career pathways.
