National Tradies Day 2026
Today, HIA NT proudly celebrates National Tradies Day and recognises the outstanding contribution of tradies across the Northern Territory.
Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to visit a construction site and speak with several tradies and apprentices who are working hard every day to build homes for Territorians. It was encouraging to hear their perspectives on the challenges our industry is currently facing, particularly ongoing skilled workforce shortages and the declining number of apprentices entering the sector.
Listening to their personal journeys into the trades was particularly insightful. While they all acknowledged that a career in construction requires commitment and hard work, they also spoke about the satisfaction and rewards that come from creating something tangible and making a lasting contribution to their communities.
A common concern raised was the difficulty in attracting young people to consider construction as a career pathway. This is despite the significant opportunities available today and the strong demand that will continue well into the future. Skilled trades remain the backbone of our industry, and while technology continues to advance, it is not yet in a position to replace the expertise, craftsmanship and workforce required on building sites.
At present, the demand for construction work continues to fall on those who are available, qualified and willing to step up. That is why today's announcement by Minister Hersey is a positive and welcome step. Initiatives that encourage more apprentices into the workforce and provide greater opportunities for industry engagement in schools will help young Territorians better understand the rewarding career opportunities available in the trades.
The future of the Northern Territory depends on developing a strong pipeline of skilled workers. The success of the 2026-29 Skills NT Plan will ultimately be measured by growth in apprenticeship numbers and, most importantly, apprenticeship completions.
