🚨NEW RESEARCH🚨 West Daly Peace Project
What does peace look like from the ground up?

Our Ground Up team at Northern Institute has been working alongside Elders and local researchers across , , and to explore conditions needed for peace. 🌿

Local researchers were central to every stage of the project, helping make visible local understandings and experiences of conflict.
🤝 Latisha Marranytya, Janine Cooper and Troy Mardigan guided the research in Nauiyu and Wadeye.
🤝 Annunciata Wilson guided the work in Peppimenarti.
🤝 Jack Wodidj and Melanie Cook were research leaders in Nganmarriyanga.

Across all four places, Elders emphasised that nurturing conditions for peace involves remembering, restoring, and sustaining right relations of kin on Country. Importantly, this is not the responsibility of Elders alone.

Government departments and services also have a role to play in supporting the conditions that enable peace.

MRF Chair Julie Calvert and Miriam Rose attend the 48th Anniversary Celebration to commemorate Territory Day.

On 1 July 1978 the Northern Territory gained self-governance from the Commonwealth Government from 1911, at the same time the
new Northern Territory flag was launched, flown and small replicas distributed to school children and Territorians.

The NT flag includes the three official NT colours - black, white and red ochre with the Sturt Desert Rose on the red ochre panel having seven petals along with a seven-pointed star in the centre, symbolising the six Australian states and the NT.
Australia’s Southern Cross is represented on the black panel.

At yesterday’s Parliament House commemoration, Dr Miriam Rose Ungunmerr Baumann was one of the significant Territorians attending and part of the cutting of the Territory cake.

Three months after the devastating Daly River floods, residents are returning to a community still without basic services.

Local leaders are calling for urgent government support to restore homes, infrastructure, and hope.

🏉 Local Sporting Success – Montana Page Marranytya Shines!

Congratulations to Montana Page Marranytya on her selection for the NT AFL U18 Girls Academy team! She proudly represented the Territory with a solid performance, playing one game and kicking one goal and one point. 👏

Montana’s achievement reflects her dedication and passion for the sport. She continues to inspire young people in our community and beyond.

The recent floods had a profound impact on Nauiyu, damaging homes, businesses, roads, and vital community facilities. Many families were displaced for weeks, with uncertainty surrounding the path back to normal life.

As waters recede, the strength of the Daly River community shines through. Families are returning, working side by side to clean homes, clear debris, and support one another. This recovery effort is a true reflection of community resilience, care, and unity.

Daly River Flood Response – March 2026

Nauiyu has been hit hard once again. As historic floodwaters forced full evacuation, families left behind not only homes, but precious cultural memories.

Miriam Rose Foundation continues to support displaced children through after-school programs in Darwin, helping maintain stability and connection.

Rebuilding will take time, care, and collaboration. Together, we stand with Nauiyu.

📘 MRF Weekly Update: 11–13 February 2026

Last month, our After School Program took children on another enriching experience, exploring the coastline at Buffalo Creek and Lee Point Beach. From learning about marine safety to discovering local fossils, each outing offered new insights and cultural connection.

These programs continue to inspire curiosity and build confidence in our young people through hands-on learning and time on Country.

Supporting Our Youth Through the Wet Season Displacement

Despite the challenges of flooding and relocation, the spirit of the Nauiyu community remains strong. Our team has been working closely with displaced families in Darwin, continuing after-school activities like Arts & Crafts at Foskey's Pavilion Showground.

The kids’ resilience and eagerness to stay engaged has been inspiring. While education continues at St John’s College for many, MRF is committed to supporting cultural connection, learning, and wellbeing every step of the way.
