Last week, the Australian American Association - Northern Territory hosted a memorial service to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the sinking the of the USS Peary, sunk in Darwin Harbour on 19 February 1942. It is both solemn β we honour those who served and perished that day β and, in a way, celebratory - we celebrate the enduring bonds between Australia and the United States, and reflect on the reconciliation with Japan, now a trusted friend and ally. Lest we forget.
We were honoured to have U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, A/Consul General Jordana Cox, Consul General Osamu Yamanaka, and Captain Bernadette Alexander as speakers, a testament to those bonds as we look to the future.
Thanks to the City of Darwin, the USMC, ADF and the cadets from the RAN. The AAA-NT couldn't have done it without their support. Thanks also to AAA-NT's other sponsors WardKeller - and the Aviation Historical Society of the NT.
