Happy International Day for Biological Diversity 🌿

Today, we celebrate the incredible biodiversity of the Northern Territory and the many people working hard to protect it. The 2026 theme, ‘Acting locally for global impact’, highlights the importance of community-led action in caring for our environment.

We’re proud to contribute to this effort by working alongside First Nations ranger groups, communities, researchers and partners. We’re fortunate to be involved in projects spanning from the coasts and Top End islands to the remote Arnhem Plateau and desert landscapes, helping to care for Country and protect biodiversity.

If you’d like to learn more about our projects we're involved in, visit www.territorynrm.org.au or check out our latest newsletter.

Together, we can help conserve the Northern Territory’s unique plants, animals and ecosystems for future generations.

🐝World Bee Day 🐝

Today we celebrate bees and recognise the essential role bees play in supporting healthy ecosystems, biodiversity, and food production.

Australia is home to more than 1,700 native bee species, which are vital pollinators for our native vegetation, fodder, flowers, fibre and food crops.

Many Northern Territory crops rely heavily on bee pollination to produce quality harvests. Mangoes have a bee dependency rate of 90%, watermelons 70%, while crops such as rockmelons and avocados can be up to 100% dependent on bee pollination. Across Australia, nearly two-thirds of agricultural production benefits from bees (Wheen Bee Foundation, n.d.).

However, bees are under increasing threat from habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, pests, diseases, and competition from introduced species.

Landholders and communities can help support pollinators by:

Planting diverse flowering species year-round
Retaining natural habitat such as hollow logs, bark and rocks
Using pesticides with low toxicity to bees and other beneficial insects
Installing simple bee hotels and nesting habitats

Without healthy bee populations, food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem health are all at risk.

🐝 Have you got any tips or tricks for helping out your buzzing neighbours? Share them in the comments below!

Sustainable Agriculture Facilitators are supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.

🌱 What’s growing on your property — and what can you do about it?

TNRM staff Susanne and Lucy teamed up with NTG W**d Management Branch to deliver a practical w**ds workshop in Batchelor. The session explored where and how w**ds thrive, highlighted species impacting local properties, and shared management approaches that can be applied on the ground.

It was great to see local landholders come together to network, share experiences, and swap ideas on tackling those pesky w**ds.

With recent flooding, you may start to see different w**ds germinating and spreading on your property. Knowing what to look for — and how to respond early — can make all the difference to the size of an infestation and the cost of managing it.

👀 Seeing new w**ds you’re unsure about?
💡 Want to build your confidence in managing w**ds?

Join us at our next w**ds workshop in Noonamah on 14 May.

A big thanks to W**ds Management Branch for providing expert guidance on effective w**d management and property planning.

🦇 Take a moment to appreciate bats… 🦇
🦇 🦇
Did you know the Northern Territory is home to more than 35 species of bats? This includes fruit-eating megabats (like flying foxes and blossom bats), a wide range of insect-eating microbats, and even the carnivorous ghost bat.

Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. Fruit bats roost in trees and navigate by sight, while microbats roost in hollows, caves and crevices, and use echolocation to move through the night and find prey.

Bats play a vital role in healthy ecosystems—dispersing seeds, pollinating plants, and helping control pests like mosquitoes. They’re also an important food source for animals such as owls and snakes.

Like many wild animals, bats can carry viruses. Interestingly, they don’t get sick in the same way humans do, thanks to a unique immune system that limits inflammation. The risk of transmission to people is rare and is usually linked to direct contact.

Stay safe:
• Never handle a bat ❌🦇
• If a bat is sick, injured, or inside your home, contact a trained wildlife rescuer ☎️

Giving wildlife space is key to keeping both bats and humans safe.

Got a possum in your roof? 🐾🏠

Relocating it might seem like the obvious solution - but it rarely works. Most relocated possums don’t survive, and others will often move straight back in.

Possums can squeeze through gaps as small as a grapefruit (70–100 mm). They can get in through loose roofing, gaps along the roofline, or small openings around vents and pipes.

Try these simple steps to manage roof visitors 👇

✔️ Wait until the possum leaves at night 🌙
✔️ Confirm the roof is empty 👀
✔️ Seal the entry point securely 🔧
✔️ Install a possum nest box nearby as an alternative home🏡🐾
✔️ Trim branches that give access to your roof 🌿✂️

These actions can help keep possums out of your roof, while still giving them a safe place to live nearby.

👉 Have you had a possum in your roof? What worked (or didn’t work) for you?

👉Tell us how you feel about possums in our short survey

Now is the perfect time to survey gamba grass!

The invasive perennial gamba grass (Andropogan gayanus) is easiest to spot during April and May because it stays taller and greener after many annual native grasses turn brown.

🔎What to look for
• Erect perennial tussock grass to 4 metres tall
• Robust stems covered in dense soft white hairs
• Leaves broad and softly hairy to 1 metre long, with a distinctive white midrib
• Seed heads v-shaped and fluffy, developing above the leaves on thick stems

📍Recording your observations
• Use a mobile GPS tracking app to record locations of gamba grass on your property
• Or use a property map and mark the isolated plants or outbreaks

⚒️Create a w**d management plan
• NTG W**d Management Branch has useful resources to support planning and control of gamba grass: https://nt.gov.au/environment/w**ds/how-to-manage-w**ds/w**d-management-planning

⚠️ Some native grasses look very similar to gamba grass and other native perennial grasses will still be green at this time, take care when surveying.
