APONT AGMP

APONT AGMP The NT Aboriginal Governance and Management Program works to strengthen NT Aboriginal organisations.

Who We Are

We are the only not-for-profit Aboriginal agency devoted to governance and management support specific to the NT, with a focus on remote communities. With decades of experience in Indigenous affairs, our small team brings trust and credibility, keys to success in the bush. About us

There are hundreds of Aboriginal organisations across the NT delivering essential services, running ente

rprises and creating employment for communities. These organisations foster local economies, self-reliance and self-determination and are at the heart and soul of NT communities and vital to reducing Indigenous disadvantage. The AGMP began after recommendations from APONT's Strong Aboriginal Governance Summit held in Tennant Creek in April 2013 attended by over 300 Aboriginal people from across the NT. The summit's strong message was that Aboriginal organisations need ongoing governance and management support, and this is how the AGMP began. How we work

The AGMP has a strengths-based, collaborative, action-research approach, meaning it:

- Works with NT Aboriginal organisations to build on their strengths, without ignoring their limitations
- Works closely with other agencies for collective positive impact
- Assists Aboriginal organisations while learning about their governance and management strengths, structures, challenges, needs and successes

Where we work

The AGMP is Territory-wide, with a focus on remote community organisations. Who we work with

We work with NT Aboriginal organisations incorporated under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) or CATSI Act 2006, the Corporations Act 2001, the NT Associations Act 2003, and unincorporated NT Aboriginal organisations and groups.

In the first week of May, we spent time in Katherine with the Board of Directors from Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation, workshopping our Governance Manual for NT Aboriginal Health Services.

At the 3-day workshop, Directors Anne Marie Lee, Deanna Kennedy, Eileen Avelum, Marlene Collins, Michele Farrell, and Yvette Roberston shared their expertise and recommendations for how to make the resource more user-friendly and reflect the real work of governance for our community-controlled health services.

The days also doubled as an opportunity for Directors to spend time together reflecting on their own organisation. One Director said of the experience, β€œThe information was very useful. [We] learned a lot. The facilitator was excellent. Would love to do more training this way.” πŸ™Œ

In April the AGMP team attended both the 2024 Aboriginal Governance and Leadership Forums and Garramilla/Darwin NT Treaty Symposium, run by the Northern Territory Government Office of Aboriginal Affairs.

The events held space for over 400 Aboriginal leaders and delegates and non-Indigenous allies from across the Northern Territory and interstate to gather, hear, and learn from some of our inspiring Aboriginal leaders.

The days were filled with inspiring stories, recognising exceptional Aboriginal leadership along with the challenges faced in two-way governance. There was space for constructive discussions on progressing treaty and truth-telling in the NT, including the necessary and often invisible work of governance. We explored the many ways our sector is demonstrating leadership, in our communities, towns and cities.

We were proud to be a part of this annual event. If you missed out this time, make sure you keep your eye out for next year.

The Aboriginal Governance and Management Program (AGMP) is proud to have been working with the Strong Women For Healthy Country Network in 2023
We celebrate the release of the 'Principles for women caring for country' which include a strong commitment to governance, representation, cultural leadership and women in decision making!

A set of best-practice principles have been drawn up to help employers support Indigenous women working in land management to "grow, progress, and blossom" in the Northern Territory.
