Just 6 months to go until new seafood labelling rules start 🦐

If your business sells seafood - like a restaurant, café, pub, takeaway or food truck - you’ll soon need to let customers know where their seafood comes from.

Clear labelling helps people make informed choices about what they order.

Now’s a great time to get ready and make sure your business is set up to meet the new seafood labelling requirements: https://business.gov.au/products-and-services/product-labelling/seafood-labelling-laws-are-changing-for-hospitality-businesses

Complementary industries are essential to teh NT's properous future!

As you drive along Tiger Brennan Drive or turn onto Frances Bay Drive near Darwin’s CBD, it's easy to overlook one of the Northern Territory’s oldest industries, the home of commercial fishing Frances Bay Mooring Basin aka 'the Duck Pond'!

Despite some common misconceptions like "all the local seafood is sent down south" or "everything sold here is imported," local vessels moor at the Duck Pond, every week. This is where your local fish retailers collect their fresh and snap-frozen NT-caught seafood, with a portion of every unload staying right here in the Territory for Territorians to enjoy at home or when dining out.

For new Territorians or as a reminder for locals, the Northern Territory was the first and remains the only State or Territory to introduce seafood labelling laws. Since November 2008, all venues are to identify imported seafood at the point of sale to the consumer. This means that both visitors and Territorians can make informed choices when buying seafood, as all imported seafood must be labelled accordingly.

So next time you're dining out or shopping for seafood, look for the label and support our local fishers by choosing NT-caught seafood. 🐠🦀🦐🐟

💧 Water licence recovery in the NT: key updates 💧

In the Northern Territory, over 600 water extraction licences allow the use of more than 600,000 ML of water annually. On average, less than 50% of the entitlements are used each year.

To promote economic development, licences require holders to use most of their entitlement for at least three consecutive years. Unused water entitlements can be recovered by the Controller of Water Resources, which are then returned to support environmental and cultural values and for use to support economic development in the region.

In 2023-24, the Katherine Tindall Limestone Aquifer was a priority for recovering unused water due to low usage (32% of entitlements). The recovery campaign successfully reclaimed 6,047 ML from nine licences, redistributing it as follows:
📃 127 ML for environmental and cultural values
🌊 3,235 ML to the Aboriginal water reserve
📰 2,575 ML for potential economic development

The allocation of this water will be reviewed in the new water plan for 2024-2026. Recovery of unused licensed entitlements is vital for managing and optimising water resources across the Territory!

Looking good!

I’m backing the industries that get the Territory working – and that means investing in bringing more land to market to support the construction industry.

We want local tradies to be on site building Darwin’s newest suburb and that’s why we are investing in bringing Greater Holtze online.

Not only are we going to be seeing more than 550 homes built in Holtze in the first tranche, we will also have Territorians working on these builds – and that provides training opportunities for workers and the chance for local businesses and subcontractors to grow.

The Holtze Land Company Pty Ltd (HLC) is a joint venture established by Territory businesses, AKJ Development No. 1 Pty Ltd and HB Constructions (NT) Pty Ltd.
