NT Writers' Centre

NT Writers' Centre The NT Writers Centre encourages literary activity in the Territory, supporting the writer’s journey Each year we run a truly inspirational writers’ festival.

We are here to support you in your writing journey – whatever that may be. We’re committed to helping writers of all persuasions work on their craft: poets, songwriters, short story writers, novelists, graphic novelists, playwrights, screenwriters, journalists, reviewers, copywriters, bloggers, business, technical and academic writers, and ESL writers. We want to help you get started, improve your

writing, get published, raise your profile and/or make your work more accessible through workshops, events, readings, book sales, competitions, awards and programs, such as ‘Meet the Publisher’ and ‘Artists in Schools’. In this fantastically liberating digital age, we want to network, share experiences and upskill writers so that everyone is up to speed with the huge amount of e-opportunities out there! For geographically isolated writers in particular, the Internet offers exciting opportunities to connect, share and sell. We run our own events, workshops and awards (NT Literary Awards and Territory Read) and pass on relevant information and opportunities from other organisations. We can help you apply for grants, but we don’t offer any of our own. In 2017 it's being held in Alice Springs, featuring emerging and established NT, Indigenous and Australasian writers.

New writing workshop from the NT Writers' Centre with award-winning author Johanna Bell coming to a town near you!

Writing the weird: how to in inject more strangeness into your writing with award-winning author Johanna Bell

Life is strange and sometimes inexplicable so why do so many writers tend towards cliches? What is it that prevents us from straying towards the strange? And how can we use play to generate surprise and satisfaction for our readers?

Join award-winning author, Johanna Bell, for a fast-paced writing workshop that embraces the odd and provides writers with practical ways to inject novelty and wonder into their writing. Drawing on work by writers like Olga Ravn, Max Porter, Victoria Chang, Miranda July, Maggie Nelson and Ben Walter, you will explore how disruption, proximity and step changes can make your writing more beguiling.

Designed for writers of all levels and forms, this hands-on workshop has something for everyone. Expect a mix of discussion, reading and generative writing and opportunities to share (for those who feel like it). All you need is a pen and paper and if you’re working on a current writing project, bring along a few excerpts.

You’ll leave the workshop with:

-A stronger understanding of what we mean by ‘weird’ and why it’s so important to your writing
-Easy-to-use techniques for writing novel and surprising content
-A library of ‘weird writers’
-A stronger connection with local writers.

It’s true!

The NT Writers Festival wouldn’t exist without the many hours our incredible volunteers put in driving cars, ushering, working in the Box Office, the Bookshop and the Green Room, and making people feel cared for and welcomed.

If you were one of our fabulous volunteers, thank you – we simply couldn’t do it without you!

We’d love for you to take our Volunteer Survey. It helps us understand what worked well, how we could do better, and supports our funding applications to help keep the festival going.

It’s a wrap on our 2026 Festival!

We were welcomed onto Country by Larrakia Elders, before being regaled with powerful storytelling, taken on immersive walks through beloved places, and drawn into deep conversations with some of the brightest writers and thinkers around.

Together, we reimagined what a writers festival can be by co-creating a sense of belonging, and we celebrated culture and language through music and song. Wow!

Thank you so much for being part of it all. Our hearts are full. 💜

If you joined us, we’d love for you to take our audience survey. 📝

This helps us understand what you loved, how we could do better, and supports our funding applications to help keep the festival going.
