At first glance, Rough Edges looks like an ordinary gathering over dinner.

There are teenage volunteers serving food in aprons.
Someone is pouring coffee.
People are sitting at tables to eat.
Conversations continue across tables.

But these small moments matter more than can be appreciated in a first glance.
And as they pile up, familiarity grows.

People relax into the space.
Trust builds.

The most meaningful support isn't always visible.

JR is 63. When he first connected with Rough Edges, he was going through a time of real instability - and without somewhere secure to store his belongings, the things he'd held onto were at risk of being lost. That kind of uncertainty adds weight to an already difficult situation.

With some practical help from our team, JR was able to secure a storage unit. Once his possessions were safe, it took away that one worry and shifted something for JR. He was then able to focus more clearly on the next steps. He attended the necessary appointments and made progress toward arrangements for longer-term housing.

It's a reminder that Rough Edges support isn't limited to providing warm meals and a safe community space. Sometimes it looks like someone sitting alongside someone, helping them solve a problem that feels overwhelming.

There’s a moment just after the doors open at Rough Edges when the noise in the room lifts all at once.

People queue comfortably because they know this place.

They know the volunteers.
They know they’ll be welcomed.

Conversations pick up where they left off the week before.

Coffee is poured.
Meals are shared.

Patrons are greeted by name.
Pets are greeted by name.

Over time, these ordinary moments become community.
Something unmistakably sacred is formed.

Recently we gathered together with a bunch of our ✨incredible Rough Edges Volunteers & staff ✨for some pizza 🍕at Darlo Pub.

It was a great opportunity get together, get to know each other and share some great stories. We have an incredible team make up of people from all different walks of life with a shared heart to serve their local community💟.

🥳We celebrate each and every one of them!

Before the doors even open, patrons are already waiting outside Rough Edges.

The tables and chairs set out on Darlinghurst Road are quickly claimed. People greet each other loudly across the footpath. Someone laughs. Someone calls out hello. Banshee the dog arrives and is welcomed by name alongside her owner.

Inside, volunteers butter fresh bread, coffee cups are lined up, ready for service, and trays of hearty food are set up in the kitchen, ready to be served.

It looks like a café.
But for many people, it’s something more familiar than that.

A little bit of covering goes a long way. ☀️

After more than 20 years, Rough Edges has a brand new awning! The finishing touch on a refurbishment that began inside the café, moved out to fresh new paving, and now reaches all the way to the streetfront.

It's a small thing, maybe. But for our patrons it's a dry seat when it rains. And for our team it's a space that feels reflective of the value they place on every person who walks through the door.

This was made possible by the extraordinary generosity of a private donor who loves this space and the community it holds. We are so grateful🙏.

Here's to many more years of community and connection. 🌿

What does it take to really understand someone else's experience?

For one recent Urban Walk participant, the answer came on a sunny morning in Darlinghurst, standing in a park and listening to their guide, Sunny (pictured here), share "raw and unfiltered recollections" of life on those streets.

"I am so grateful for the Urban Walk guides who generously share their stories with strangers like me," they wrote afterwards, "so we can begin to understand what it might be like to walk in someone else's shoes."

Our Urban Walks are led by people with lived experience of homelessness and the Rough Edges community. They're eye-opening, impacting and, above all, deeply human.

Easter for many means a long weekend, maybe some chocolate and sitting down to a meal with friends and family.

But not everyone has a table to come home to.

As the season turns and the nights get cooler, we're thinking of the people in our community and we're grateful to be a place where there's always a seat, always a meal, and always someone who's glad you came.
