Our values are revealed in what we stand for, what we are willing to fight for and what matters to us. I always describe them to clients as our North Star. They direct and focus attention and energy.
There’s been a bit of talk in politics about values lately. But values are not something we pick up and put down as we choose. We don’t choose kindness for one group of people, that’s bias not values.
We don’t believe in dignity only when it is convenient, comfortable or close to home.
We don’t stand for fairness only when the person affected looks like us, thinks like us, votes like us, or lives like us.
Values ask more of us than that.
In my coaching work, I support people to lead with greater self-awareness, clarity and integrity. Through my work with Human Rights Watch, I am reminded that values must also reach beyond the personal. They must shape what we notice, what we question, what we speak up about, and what we refuse to ignore.
Fairness. Justice. Kindness. Accountability. Human dignity.
These are not abstract words to me. They are commitments.
And I feel proud to stand alongside the researchers, staff, experts, partners and supporters who continue to do this work with rigour, courage and care.
If you want to discuss your values or how you can enact them for yourself, your family or community. Please get in touch.
The world does not need more passive goodness. It needs people willing to stand for something.
