Almost half the people living in poverty in New South Wales right now include people who have a job 👨‍💻

Working people aren't cutting luxuries- they can't afford the basics ❌

We've released the Affordability Snapshot, that's revealed the cost of living crisis is pulling in working households and middle-income earners, who are the changing face of poverty in 2026 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

And this isn't a one-off crisis. It's a trend. NSW is becoming a harder place to afford to live 💰

And if the findings surprise you — share this video💡

Because the first step is seeing poverty for what it now is.

We've been conditioned to think poverty is confined to the margins of our economy - but the data shows that the exact opposite is happening in NSW.

NCOSS' Affordability Snapshot Report has shattered that myth - showing an increase in households experiencing poverty for the first time.

1 in 3 households were financially stable a few years ago, in 2026 they are the changing face of poverty in NSW.

The Fair Work Commission has handed down a landmark decision on the SCHADS Award — formally recognising the gender-based undervaluation of our sector's workforce and mandating significant changes to classifications.

This is a hard-won milestone for the community sector following significant advocacy from NCOSS and the COSS Network, and organisations like the Australian Services Union NSW & ACT.

Alongside a 4.75% award wage increase from 1 July 2026, the decision delivers strong pay protections for existing employees, and explicit recognition of lived experience as a basis for classification. But the work isn't done. Governments are yet to commit funding to cover these increases, and the path to implementation by 1 October 2027 will be complex for many organisations.

NCOSS is pursuing funding as an urgent advocacy priority and will share a detailed member briefing in the coming weeks.

Alongside members of the NCOSS and Legislative Council Secretariat team, we were fortunate to hear from the Hon. Stephen Lawrence MLC at yesterday’s NSW Legislative Council Parliamentary Inquiries Workshop.

Participants gained valuable insights into the Parliamentary Inquiries process, including practical tips on how to engage effectively and prepare strong, impactful submissions. It was a fantastic opportunity to build knowledge, confidence, and skills for contributing to public policy discussions.

Thank you to Mr Lawrence for sharing his expertise and experience with our participants.

Did you know, Aboriginal people are 2.3 times less likely to screen for bowel cancer than non-Indigenous people 🤔

Bowel cancer is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer, but if detected early it can be successfully treated in more than 90% of cases.

A bowel cancer screening test will be posted to people aged 50-to-74 every two years.

Do the test when it comes in the post 📮

Reconciliation is everyone's business.

For the social services sector, it means listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, centring their voices, and supporting self-determination in the work we do every day.

This National Reconciliation Week, we recommit to walking alongside First Nations peoples — not just this week, but always.

Reconciliation belongs to all of us, and at NCOSS, we’re 'all in'.

Today is National Sorry Day. We pause to acknowledge the Stolen Generation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families, communities and culture, and to honour their resilience, their families, and the survivors who carry this history.

Healing begins with truth. NCOSS stands with First Nations communities in remembering, listening, and committing to the work that still lies ahead.
