Youth employment program

We know that young people are among the most severely impacted by the economic downturn – we are seeing a larger proportion of people aged under 30 lose work and we know it will take longer for them to find a new job.

In response, the Victorian Government has launched the new Working for Victoria Youth Employment Program (YEP). Up to 800 young people will have the opportunity to kickstart their careers and develop their skills for the future. These 6-12 month jobs in the public service will give young Victorians a foot in the door through on-the-job experience and training.

The Youth Employment Program is open to Victorians who are:
• aged between 17 and 29 years at the time of application
• unemployed
• eligible to be employed by the Victorian Government.

Are you looking for paid work experience?

The Working for Victoria Youth Employment Program offers 6-12 month jobs in the Victorian public service for people aged between 17 and 29. Get a foot in the door and on-the-job experience and training.

Today is R U OK? Day.

RUOK is a su***de prevention charity in Australia, reminding people to take the time to check in on their mates, colleagues and family.

The message this year is, "There’s more to say after R U OK?”. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us.

You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.

FYI ... ,

After making the decision to contain nine public housing towers in Flemington & North Melbourne, we are working with all affected residents to meet all their needs during this difficult time.

As someone who grew up in the area, & spent years working at some of these towers as a social worker, I know how challenging this period will be for residents.

To our affected tenants, please be assured the Victorian Government and I are standing with you and that all the resources needed will be made available.

The immediate support measures that have just been announced by the Premier include:

• Health care workers to contact each tenant to discuss needs and offer testing.

• Suspension of rent to the affected tenants for two weeks.
$750 hardship payment will be provided to affected households.

• The Government will continue providing one-off $1500 payments to support workers who are affected by these measures.

• A range of services are already available on the ground across the estates, with the Victorian Multicultural Commission actively engaging community leaders, issuing messages to its distribution network and playing a key role as the liaison point for community coordination.

• Translators are onsite and will be doorknocking to help explain the directions and understand the individual assistance tenants might need.

• Deliveries of activity boxes for kids including crayons, Lego and puzzle books have already begun. A dedicated hotline has also been established to make sure help is available when and where it’s needed.

We all wish that we weren’t having to make these decisions – but they have been made to protect the health, safety & ultimately lives of our public housing tenants.

As we continue to fight this virus the Government will make sure every public housing tenant impacted by these measures get the support they need over the coming days.
