A painful reminder to always take your fishing gear with you 🎣💔
This Grey-headed Flying Fox found himself in serious trouble when a three-pronged fishing hook became embedded through his lip and nose.

Thankfully, the team at Bats QLD came to his rescue and safely transported him to our RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, where our Wildlife Vet team got to work.

Under anaesthetic, our Vet team carefully cut the hook into sections before gently removing each piece.

Despite how nasty his injuries looked, this little guy has healed well and is now continuing his rehabilitation ❤️🦇

But not every animal caught in fishing gear is so lucky.

Discarded hooks and fishing line can remain a serious threat long after a day of fishing is over, catching, tangling and seriously injuring unsuspecting wildlife.

So next time you cast a line, please take all hooks, line and fishing gear with you. And if you spot discarded fishing gear while you’re out and about, and it’s safe to collect, please pick it up and bin it.

A few seconds cleaning up can prevent a painful injury for wildlife ❤️

And remember, if you ever find a bat in trouble, never attempt to handle it yourself. Keep your distance and call the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL, Bats Qld, Bat Conservation and Rescue Qld, or your nearest wildlife carer.

🔴 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐃𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆! 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐂𝐊 𝐁𝐄𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐔𝐄.

A baby bird on the ground is not automatically abandoned. Picking it up and taking it away could mean removing a healthy youngster from the parents still caring for it.

We know people want to help. But 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬.

At 𝐑𝐒𝐏𝐂𝐀 𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐍, we’re urging everyone to stop and assess before collecting a baby bird. Our rescue team’s job numbers are already similar to those recorded at the peak of last summer and we’re only entering trauma season.

𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐆?

🔸 A bright, responsive fledgling with feathers may be learning to fly. If it is in a safe spot, leave it there, keep pets away and watch from a distance. Its parents may be nearby.

🔸 A younger bird with few feathers may need help getting back into its nest. Follow the attached flowchart and seek advice if you’re unsure.

🔸 A sick or injured bird needs help. Take it to a vet or call 𝐑𝐒𝐏𝐂𝐀 𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐋 (𝟏𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝟐𝟔𝟒 𝟔𝟐𝟓).

🔸 Brush turkey chicks are independent from hatching. They do not receive parental care and should be left alone unless sick or injured.

If a bird needs to come into care, place it on a towel in a small box and keep it warm, dark and quiet. 𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫.

🔵 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐘 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐒: 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄 𝐇𝐎𝐂𝐔𝐒, 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐂𝐔𝐒, 𝐀 𝐖𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄!

These two beautiful Ragdoll boys have worked their magic on Bridget and Kevin from Victoria Point, who welcomed them into their family on 9th October.

Now three months old, 𝐇𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 were surrendered to our Inspectorate on 25 August. Too young for adoption, they went into the care of one of our amazing foster carers, where they received the love and care they needed until they were ready for their next chapter.

Playful, curious and affectionate, these little boys love exploring, chasing toys and enjoying cuddles once their kitten adventures are done.

Bridget and Kevin have sent us these lovely photos and the wonderful news that 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 and are loving life!

Thank you, Bridget and Kevin, for giving Hocus and Pocus a loving home together. A special thank you also to their foster carer and all the wonderful foster carers who help our youngest animals grow and thrive.

Formerly known as Johnny, this sweet 4-year-9-month-old Dachshund has a new name and a wonderful new life with Bethany and Tom from Northgate.

After coming into care as a stray in early September, Sunny needed a little help building his confidence. He was eager to please, quick to learn and very happy to work for a tasty treat!

Now, his family tells us his 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 and his playful personality is shining through. He’s answering to his new name and making amazing progress with his recall.

His favourite things include playing with his cousin Arnie the Cavoodle, snuffle balls, rolling around in blankets and walks around the reserve. Car rides are another highlight, especially watching the world through the window. And carrots? A definite winner!

Sunny has also been a very good boy at the vet, who says he’s healthy and making great progress.

He still likes to keep his people in sight, so Bethany and Tom are gently helping him feel more comfortable spending short periods on his own. With patience and gradual practice, he’s making progress there too.

𝐇𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 and has well and truly won everyone over.

🔵 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐘 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋 – 𝐁𝐎𝐋𝐓 🐾

Sometimes the perfect family comes along and everything just falls into place!

Bolt, our 15-month-old Amstaff, was surrendered to 𝐑𝐒𝐏𝐂𝐀 𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐍 in late August. Initially a little unsure, he soon blossomed into an outgoing, happy-go-lucky boy.

On 11th September, Bolt headed home with Kristin and Brock from Deception Bay. Now a month later, they say it feels as though he has been with them his whole life!

This lovable boy with a 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝 has made himself right at home. His days are filled with walks, car rides and playtime with his cousin Buffy the Bull Terrier. There’s also a big backyard to explore, plenty of toys and two new kids to share the fun!

Best of all, Bolt is part of family life, just as he always deserved to be. Kristin and Brock describe him as 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 and say they love him so much.

Today is International Vet Nurse Day and we’re celebrating the caring, dedicated people who make such a difference to the animals at 𝐑𝐒𝐏𝐂𝐀 𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐍.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐳 were presented with flowers and chocolates from shelter manager Dee and the whole Dakabin team as a little thank you for their hard work and kindness.

Our lead vet nurse 𝐃𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐧 is working at Wacol today, but he’s very much part of our celebrations too!

From caring for frightened arrivals to helping animals recover and feel comfortable again, our vet nurses bring skill, patience and compassion to every day. Their work helps give vulnerable animals the chance of a happier future.

Checking your pets daily for ticks can be a life saver. Take the time to check those ‘hidden’ places like under the collar, between toes and inside their ears 🐱🐶

If you find a tick on your pet, or they start to show symptoms of tick paralysis ACT FAST - Take them to your local vet immediately.

Meet Bundy and Evie 👋

🔵 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐘 𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐋 — 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐀 #𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 #𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥

When Diamantina was released to 𝐑𝐒𝐏𝐂𝐀 𝐃𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐍 on 5th September after being found as a stray, she was terrified. This sweet girl needed plenty of encouragement and a family with time and patience to help her feel safe.

Now 11 months old, she has found just that with Fay and Neil from Ningi, who adopted her last Friday. And it took her 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 to start making herself at home!

By Saturday night, she was zooming through the house, snuggling between her new mum and dad and enjoying a snooze on Fay’s lap. She has also claimed their bed as her nightly sleeping spot. Clearly, the sleeping arrangements have been settled!

Her new scratching post in the enclosed patio is getting an enthusiastic workout too.

Fay and Neil describe her as cute, affectionate and loving, and couldn’t be happier to have her in their family. They’ve chosen a lovely new name to suit her colouring: 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐲.

From a frightened little girl to a much-loved family member, what a wonderful change. Thank you, Fay and Neil, for giving Misty the love and reassurance she needed to shine.

Patrick is a lovable larrikin who has been through quite the adventure and is now ready to swap shelter life for a comfy couch, and a family to call his own.

When Patrick first arrived in our care, he had a broken leg that needed orthopaedic surgery. After an extended recovery and plenty of strict doctor’s orders, this boy is finally back on all four paws and ready to put his medical saga firmly behind him 🐾🎉

And what does Patrick love now that he's feeling better? Pretty much anything that involves his favourite people!

After spending so much time on restricted rest, Patrick can sometimes get a little carried away with his newfound freedom and may briefly transform into a Formula 1 race car and zoom around at top speed! 🏎️💨 And behind all that speed is a clever boy who genuinely wants to please 🐶🥰
