1 OCTOBER - START OF BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD

1 October is the official start of the Bush Fire Danger Period, which runs through until 31 March 2027.

During this time, a Fire Permit is required before lighting a fire.
If you’re planning to burn, you must have the appropriate permit in place before you light up. Remember, permits may also be suspended during periods of increased fire danger.

➡️ You can apply for a free Fire Permit online at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify
➡️ Notify the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before lighting via www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or by calling the RFS Canobolas Zone Fire Control Centre on 6363 6666 Monday to Friday during business hours
➡️ Notify all neighbours at least 24 hours before lighting

It’s time again, for Get Ready Weekend !

Meet your local RFS brigade at the Cumnock Community Family Fun Day on the 17th of October between 10am and 3pm to learn how to prepare your home, property and family for the bush fire season.

We will have some of our Fire Trucks and equipment on display, Activities and giveaways for the kids, and lots of material on how you can get prepared.

FIRECALL: Structure and Grass Fire - Cumnock

At 7:09PM last night, Cumnock Rural Fire Brigade was paged to a Structure and Grass Fire in Cumnock. We responded with our Bulk Water Tanker and Cat 7 Tanker, and were quickly supported by crews from Molong Rural Fire Brigade, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 380 Molong, Eurimbla and Yeoval Rural Fire Brigades. NSW Police and NSW Ambulance were also in attendance.

Crews were on scene for a few hours to extinguish this fire.

NSW Police are investigating the cause of this fire, and we urge anyone with any information to please contact Orange Police Station.

We also want to remind the community that if you see a fire that is not attended, please call Triple Zero (000) immediately. This will ensure a prompt response by Emergency services.

With the start of the Bush Fire Danger Period only a couple of weeks away (on 1 October), this is a timely reminder to "Get Ready" and prepare your homes and properties for these sort of fast moving fires.

The Cumnock Rural Fire Brigade will be holding our "Get Ready Weekend" event at the Cumnock Community Family Fun Day on 17 October. Come and see the team and get some tips and advice on how you can make sure you are well prepared for the fire season ahead.

Could a fire truck access your home in an emergency?

When fires occur, firefighters need safe and reliable access to your property.

Truck sizes can vary, but a good consideration is our Cat 1 tanker which can be up to 7.8 metres long, 2.5 metres wide, and require a turning circle of approximately 22 metres.

Overgrown vegetation, narrow access tracks, low branches, soft ground, or locked gates can delay emergency response and place crews at risk.

Good access helps firefighters protect your home, your family, and your community.

The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends property access tracks and driveways have:

• A minimum width of 3.5 metres.
• A vertical clearance of 4 metres from overhanging branches or structures.
• Adequate turning space for large fire appliances.
• All weather surfaces capable of supporting heavy vehicles.
• Clearly accessible gates and entrances.

Clear access can help emergency services reach your property quickly when it matters.

HOW TO NOTIFY US OF YOUR PLANNED BURN 🔥

1. Notify the NSW Rural Fire Service
Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify at least 24 hours before your planned burn and complete the online notification form.
You'll need to provide:
• Your name and contact details
• The property address where the burn will take place
• Your planned start date and expected end date
• The purpose of the burn (e.g. pile burn, stubble burn, agricultural burn, land clearing, hazard reduction, etc.)
⚠️ Please read and accept all conditions before submitting your notification.

✅ 2. Notify Your Neighbours
At least 24 hours before your burn, notify all adjoining landholders, including neighbours across the road.

✅ 3. Check Conditions Before You Burn
Before lighting your fire, check the latest weather forecast and Fire Danger Rating to ensure conditions are safe and suitable.
