Vehicle fire at Cummins - 27 May 2026: Around 7.30am, CFS firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle fire on the Tod Highway at Cummins on the Eyre Peninsula.

Crews on 2 trucks arrived to find a dolly attached to a road train on fire.

Thankfully, the driver was able to disconnect the dolly and prevent the fire from spreading further throughout the truck.

Unfortunately, the dolly was completely destroyed with damages estimated around $60,000.

The fire was likely caused by a mechanical fault.

Firefighters also used thermal imaging cameras to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

SA Police provided support on scene.

TOTAL FIRE BANS have been declared for Saturday 15 March 2025 in the following Fire Ban Districts:

West Coast - Extreme
Eastern Eyre Peninsula - Extreme
Lower Eyre Peninsula - Extreme
Mid North - Extreme
Mount Lofty Ranges - Extreme
Yorke Peninsula - Extreme
Kangaroo Island - Extreme
Upper South East - Extreme
Lower South East - Extreme

Where Total Fire Bans have been declared, very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted.

The Total Fire Ban will apply for 24 hours from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow.

The CFS recommends that you implement your Bushfire Survival Plan.

Fire Danger Ratings
Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Extreme, only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire.

What should you do
If you don't have a plan to ensure your survival, leaving early before a fire starts is your safest option.

In making your plan, you should be aware that in high fire danger conditions, essential services including mains-fed electricity and water supply may not be available due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Landowners are asked to adhere to local harvest codes of practice which are available from your local council.

Landowners are also asked to ensure that any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished before midnight tonight.

Agencies are advised to activate their Total Fire Ban procedures in preparation for these predicted fire weather conditions

Cummins took delivery of a new 24P today.

The new Cummins 24P is based on a 2021 Isuzu FTS 139-260 chassis, is 4 x 4 and carries 2000 litres of water.

Built by Fraser Fire and Rescue, it is fitted with a Deutz BF4L2011W motor / Darley HE500 pump.

It includes additional safety features to protect firefighters, including a halo system (water deluge system) and an in-cab breathing system.

It comes fitted with an LED light bar and Engel fridge, and equipped with battery powered tools - including a Stihl chainsaw, a Stihl quick cut saw and a Ramfan Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fan.

It replaces the existing 18 year old Isuzu based Cummins 34P, which will be sent to another brigade.

Thanks Dean Norman for the photo.
