On Sunday, our @‌melbmara runners went the distance for brilliant cancer research, and together you raised over $150,000!

For a small charity like ours, that’s extraordinary. It placed us 7th on the Melbourne Marathon charity leaderboard, right alongside some of Australia’s biggest charities.

🏅 Congratulations to every runner who conquered the course. What an achievement! A special shoutout to Daniel, who raised an incredible $14k, and to Ella, John and Matthew, who each raised over $7k.

To all our runners, fundraisers and supporters: thank you for making this marathon unforgettable and for bringing us one step closer to a future free from cancer.

Meet Erfan 💙

This year, Erfan is running the Nike for @‌curecancerau 🏃‍♂️

One Saturday afternoon, his best friend called. Doctors preparing him for surgery after an accident had found something no one was looking for: cancer.

In that moment, everything changed.

Now, every kilometre Erfan runs is for his friend, and to turn one devastating phone call into something that moves us forward.

He chose Cure Cancer to help fund the emerging researchers working towards better treatments and, one day, cures.

But there's real progress. Five-year survival has climbed from 75% to 93% over the past 30 years, and research has helped make that possible.

What if the next 10 minutes changed everything?

An Australian dies from cancer roughly every 10 minutes*. But every one of those minutes is also a chance for a brilliant researcher, with early support, to change that number for good.

Since 1967, we've kick started over 580 research projects by funding emerging researchers with bold, daring ideas. Game-changing ones. Because breakthroughs don't start with certainty. They start with someone asking, "what if?"

Congratulations to Dr Kevin Fenix and the team at the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research on receiving an MRFF Clinical Trial Grant for 2026 to 2028 👏

Kevin, alongside Prof Timothy Price, Dr Yoko Tomita, Dr Eric Smith, and Prof Guy Maddern, will lead the IMPACT-CRC pilot study at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, working with the University of Padova. The trial will test whether cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy, using a patient's own laboratory-expanded immune cells alongside standard chemotherapy, can be safely and practically delivered as part of routine care for metastatic bowel cancer.

It is a significant step for a treatment approach Kevin has been building the evidence for since his early postdoctoral research, some of it funded in its formative stages by Cure Cancer, mapping exactly which components of CIK therapy drive its anti-cancer effect. Seeing that groundwork translate into an Australian clinical trial is a great outcome for the field, and for the patients who may benefit.

Congratulations to Dr Lochlan Fennell, who has been appointed Associate Director of CRE ARTEMIS, a newly established $5.8 million Early-Onset Bowel Cancer Centre of Research Excellence.

Bringing together 22 leading experts from across Australia, the centre will investigate why more young Australians are being diagnosed with bowel cancer and explore new opportunities for prevention, early detection, and treatment. Lochlan will lead the centre's Queensland node, based at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, and is establishing a biobank there to study tissue from patients diagnosed under 50.

Bowel cancer diagnoses in Australians under 50 have more than doubled since 2000, so this research could not be more timely. The five-year initiative will also train the next generation of researchers and clinicians through scholarships and fellowships, work that builds on the same emerging-researcher pipeline Cure Cancer donors have long supported, including Lochlan's own early bowel cancer research.

Congratulations, Lochlan, on this well-deserved appointment.

Our volunteers deserve one more shoutout. 💜

At this year's TCS Sydney Marathon , you showed up early, stayed late, and gave your energy freely - all so runners and fundraisers could have the best possible day.

From handing out water at the last station before the Opera House finish line, to cheering runners on, you created joy, lifted spirits and made the day truly memorable.

Thank you for everything you gave this year. We'll see you out there in 2027! 💜
