CCG Efforts Recognised by Council

I'm delighted to share the letter I received from North Sydney Council which recognised the efforts of our Group in successfully achieving the state heritage listing of the Hayden Orpheum Theatre.
Special thanks to our Mayor, Zoรซ Baker for her personal interventions on behalf of our community, with the Minister for Heritage, the Hon. PennySharpe. Thanks also for the excellent work from the Council's planning and heritage staff for submitting a highly detailed submission that led to the heritage listing.
Our iconic Art Deco cinema will now be preserved for all to enjoy today and into the future.
WELL DONE EVERYONE! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ“ฃ MINISTER FOR HERITAGE MEETS MAYOR AND CCG AT CREMORNE ORPHEUM THEATRE
Given her very busy working day, we were delighted that last Friday the Minister for Heritage, Hon. Penny Sharpe MLC was able to make time to meet Mayor Zoรซ Baker from North Sydney Council, and Fiona Gracie and Chris Holding from the CCG, at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace recognising the State heritage listing of this spectacular Art Deco theatre.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘CREMORNE ORPHEUM THEATRE STATE HERITAGE LISTED
The Cremorne Conservation Group is elated by this decision.
Our campaign for this listing started back in 2022. A major highlight was our feature event at the Orpheum, under the auspices of the National Trust Heritage Festival, attracting an audience of around 500 patrons and VIP dignatories from local and state governments, to raise awareness that the Orpheum did not have a state heirtage listing (which was a surprise to all!)
Massive thanks to everyone for your continued support of our campaign, especially Mayor Zoรซ Baker, North Sydney Council, the Orpheum management, Heritage NSW, and the Hon. Penny Sharpe who made the directive to list this spectacular Art Deco complex on the State Heritage register for all to enjoy for many generations to come.

PARRAWEEN COTTAGES PROTECTED WITH HERITAGE LISTING
On 20 May 2024, the State Dept of Planning approved the individual and group heritage listing of a row of 6 cottages at 78-88 Parraween Street Cremorne, to be known as the Parraween Street Group.

Built at the turn of the 20th century the Federation Queen Ann cottages are historic reminders of Cremorne's past. The group has additional significance as it provides a historic streetscape setting for the heritage listed Cremorne Orpheum Picture Palace on the opposite side of Parraween Street.

The photos show Parraween House at 88 Parraween St; and also 84 Parraween St on the right).

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Well done and thank you to everyone involved in achieving this amazing outcome after more than 3 years of the hard work.

SHOCK DECISION - MINSISTER TO REVOKE HOLT AVE IHO

115-119 Holt Avenue could soon be demolished ๐Ÿ˜จ

We've just been notified that tomorrow, Friday 18 August, the Minister for Heritage will revoke the Interim Heritage Order (IHO) that protects 115-119 Holt Avenue from demolition โ€“ in other words, these 3 houses could be demolished within days!

We do not know why the Minister has decided to take this action.

WE MUST ACT IMMEDIATELY TO SAVE THESE HOUSES
โ€“ Email the Hon. Minister Penny Sharpe directly โ€“
Mayor Zoรซ Baker wrote to the Minister this afternoon seeking urgent action to protect these properties by issuing a fresh IHO to ensure these buildings will not be demolished before the current Gateway process for the Planning Proposal has been finalised.

Each of us can also write to the Minister urging that a fresh IHO is issued simultaneously at the same time the existing IHO is revoked. That action will help provide continued protection for the houses while the Planning Proposal is processed.

Our community has campaigned long and hard for over two years on this issue. The community now wants to see that due and fair process is occurring.

Your email can be a short yet strong statement along those lines. Or for more detail, please read the attached letter.

EMAIL THE MINISTER BEFORE 9:00AM TOMORROW FRIDAY 18 AUGUST at -

Please copy [email protected] in your email so that we can advise Council of the level of community response to this critical issue.

Heritage of Parraween Street before the Land & Environment Court

Twenty members of the CCG attended the LEC today to hear expert heritage consultants give evidence in Skermanic v North Sydney Council โ€ฆ passing 'The Strand' built 1891 (the same era as some of the Parraween workers' cottages being discussed today) it was clear that heritage and modernity can co-exist.

Which buildings do you think stand the test of timeโ€ฆ??

COUNCIL CELEBRATES 50 YEAR PRECINCT ANNIVERSARY ๐Ÿ™Œ

21 May saw the 50-year anniversay of the start of the North Sydney Precinct system, initiated by Ted Mack when he became mayor. For the first time, it gave North Sydney residents an active role in what actions were taken by Council in their local communities. We're told that it's the envy of residents from other LGAs.
If you haven't yet been to a Precinct meeting, I urge you to do so.
You will learn so much about what is happening in your 'neck of the woods' and also make freinds along the way.
Thanks goes to Council for hosting this event to recognise the enormous amount of work done by the Precinct volunteers! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ

Neutral Bay Town Centre Planning Study update

Last night, 30 May, Chris Holding and myself attended the Council's community engagement event about the future of the Neutral Bay Town Centre, held with key community stakeholders from Precincts located in and around Neutral Bay, as well as with other community group members such as ourselves.
Various concept plans were tabled and opinions sought about the 'Bay', with building heights receiving much of the attention.
There was a resounding "NO" from attendees to a potenial increase in building height along Military Rd from the current 5 to 8-10 storeys. it will be interesting to read what the Council report recommends when it is published towards the end of this year... ๐Ÿค”
