The Pilbara’s largest and most significant wetland, Fortescue Marsh Nature Reserve (Nyiyaparli Country), has been formally protected under a new joint management plan.

Covering around 107,000 hectares between the Chichester Range and Hamersley Range, the reserve holds deep ceremonial and mythological importance for Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners.

One of just three inland wetlands in north-west WA capable of supporting up to a million waterbirds, this remarkable landscape also shelters rare species like the night parrot, northern quoll, greater bilby and Pilbara olive python.

This milestone forms part of the WA Government’s Plan for Our Parks, which has established more than 6.5 million hectares of new protected areas across Western Australia.

There’s been an exciting ocean discovery off the coast of Albany by marine ecology researcher, Océane Attlan, a PhD candidate with the UWA Oceans Institute. One of Australia’s rarest fish, the elusive Pictilabrus brauna, was spotted during a recent dive off Albany.

Seen only once since its discovery in 1996, this tiny, vividly coloured wrasse grows to less than 7.5cm and exists nowhere else on Earth. Its extremely limited range along WA’s south-west coast, and its well-camouflaged nature, make sightings incredibly rare.

After years without confirmed records, and concerns the species may have been lost due to recent marine heatwaves, this rediscovery is a significant and hopeful moment for marine conservation. Visit our website to find out more: https://www.ourwaparks.org.au/

Western Australia’s national parks encompass some of the most wild and undisturbed places remaining on Earth. At WA Parks Foundation, we deliver programs that help protect and preserve these landscapes through programs that support conservation, education and long-term environmental care across WA’s parks.

As the end of financial year approaches, we’re inviting people who love these places to help care for them too.

EOFY donations are tax deductible. Click on www.ourwaparks.org.au to find out how to donate or become a member.

Australia’s iconic eucalypts take centre stage in a fascinating new book by internationally recognised scientist Stephen Hopper AC.

A leading expert from University of Western Australia, Professor Hopper has spent over 50 years researching these remarkable trees. His latest work dives deep into their history, biology, cultural significance, and the vital role of Indigenous knowledge in understanding and protecting them.

From the towering Eucalyptus regnans — one of the tallest flowering plants on Earth —to the resilient, bonsai-like mallees of Western Australia, the book showcases the extraordinary diversity of over 900 eucalypt species. Incredibly, almost all species can only be found only in Australia.
