A Clean Sweep at Master Mariners 2026!

Pelican Point enjoyed a top day at the 2026 Master Mariners competition on Sunday with our Scout, Venturer and Rover Crews all winning their respective trophies. The competition covers Sailing, Rowing Power boat operation, seamanship, chart work and knotting and splicing skills. A total of 15 crews attended from around the river. Many thanks to the Company Of Master Mariners for supporting the competition with ships masters to asses the teams. Thanks also to our galley team who provided an endless supply of food and drink through out the day.

Swanabout 2026 was run over the 7/8 March weekend. Pelican Point was one of 5 sea scout bases that stayed open for 30 hours to support the yachts from all the sea scout groups that attempted to cover the most Km's that they could. Dnghies were only sailing in daylight but the seaboats and keel boats which have lights could sail all night as well, and many did!
Each base had a control area set up with computers connected to the swanabout server and was kept busy keeping track of every leg sailed. Plenty of leaders rostered on for the whole event.
further photos soon of the boats out sailing. Photo credit Rosemarie & family

With Swanabout only days away the workshop crew have put in some solid hours over the last week to get our last 2 boats back in the water for the event, last in was Beejay. She rolled out of the shed on Saturday to have all her deck hardware refitted and the mast stepped. She has had a full re-spray of the decks and cabin while the sides and below water line were all painted by roller/brush, new hatches were made and the wiring overhauled.
Earlier we had finished some repairs to sewinds mast step and she is back in and ready to sail....now we await Swanabout on Saturday and Sunday, lets hope the weather is kind

In answer to a comment a short while ago about the Meters wood stove that used to grace the corner of the galley, with the hot water drum above it, all things grow old and so did the stove... Photos of the current galley are attached, the new flooring covers the axe chips in the concrete from scouts cutting firewood in the galley and the paint obscures the smoke line that came down to the top of the door! All shiny and modern now and air conditioned too!! Photo- the Warden

The lower deck has received some long overdue attention of late, with many thanks to those families who made donations back in June along with some grant funding. We now have the air conditioning installed which makes a huge difference to the space on hot/humid days. The recent sailing course was most appreciative of the better learning conditions when they had 20+ venturers in there completing chart work and other sessions.
Also visible in the photo are our new, partly completed, cabinets that will replace the old cupboards and boxes. The drawers and doors will be on soon and the Joey leaders and Tracey will stow away Joey equipment and some of our extensive catering items.
The next project will be the upper deck! Photo: the GL

Welcome back to our readers after Christmas, its been a busy January at The Point despite the younger members being on holidays. Beejay is now in the workshop and getting her 10 year refit. all her deck hardware has been removed as Matt gets ready to spray paint the deck/cockpit with 2 pack primer and top coat, meanwhile the free board has been primed and top coated and the below waterline area has been primed ready for antifouling.
Outside the workshop we have completed works on the retic, jetty abutments, cleaned rocks back to the jetty that were washed in over winter and finished off some more anti erosion measures at the south end of the beach. Bob has continued his fight against the rye grass in the lawn- he isn't winning! Sailing has commenced with Inside Charge Course training underway. Photo credit - the Warden
