UWAYE recently hosted Strength in Perspectives, an inspiring evening celebrating the diverse experiences, challenges and stories that shape stronger outcomes in engineering. 🌏💡

We’re deeply grateful to our company partners Fluor, INPEX, Hatch and Wesfarmers (WesCEF) for supporting this event and sharing their insights through both the panel discussion and interactive workshops.

A huge thank you to our incredible panellists, Erlynn Dann, Vandana Crispin, Tarik Haroon and Karen Zhou, who shared their journeys across project engineering, subsea engineering, project management and process engineering. Their reflections on leadership, resilience, communication and career growth reminded us of the value of learning from different perspectives.

💡 Workshops that shaped the evening:
• Fluor – What to expect in your first 12–18 months as a graduate, exploring early-career challenges and how to approach them
• INPEX – Real-life engineering scenarios where diverse backgrounds helped solve complex problems
• Hatch – Regional Renewable Energy, exploring sustainable energy solutions for a WA town facing seasonal demand and network challenges
• WesCEF – Communicating complex engineering projects clearly to leaders, stakeholders and the wider community

This event showed us that engineering is strengthened not only by technical knowledge, but by the people, perspectives and experiences that drive innovation forward 🚀.

Last week, UWAYE hosted our Hackathon with BHP, where students worked in teams over two days to design, program and present an innovative solution to a real-world problem.

For this year, BHP presented contestants with the following problem statement:
Crew members aboard large ore-carrying ships must adjust the tension in mooring lines to avoid overloading the hooks. How can we provide ship crews with real-time mooring line tension data and improve the safety and efficiency of the loading operation?

A huge thank you to BHP for both sponsoring and partnering with us on this year’s Hackathon - the event wouldn’t have been possible without your support and guidance.

Congratulations to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams on their amazing results, who have been awarded cash prizes of $1000, $750, and $500, respectively.

1st place: More Lines 🥇
2nd place: Tuna Sandwich V2 🥈
3rd place: Fast and Moorious 🥉

Finally, we would like to congratulate all the other teams for their dedication, creativity and innovation. The talent on display was amazing across the board and every solution was truly impressive. We sincerely thank you for your participation in this year’s Hackathon with BHP and we look forward to what the future holds for UWAYE’s Hackathon event.
