Outdoors WA - OWA Outdoors WA is the Peak Body for the outdoor sector in Western Australia

This story from the Pilbara is a powerful reminder of just how quickly things can go wrong in the Western Australian outback and bush.

No matter how experienced you are, how well you know the area, or how confident you are in your survival skills, becoming lost can happen to anyone.

That's why carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) on your person – not in your vehicle, backpack left at camp, or tent – could make all the difference. If you're separated from your gear, a PLB that's with you can be the critical link that helps rescuers find you.

With more Western Australians getting outdoors to hike, 4WD, prospect, camp and explore, we've seen an increase in search and rescue incidents across the state. A few hundred dollars spent on a PLB could be the difference between a successful rescue and a tragedy.

The outdoors should be enjoyed, but it should also be respected. Taking a few minutes to refresh your knowledge, check your gear and plan ahead can have a huge impact when things don't go to plan.

Visit the Adventure Smart WA website for practical safety resources, planning tools and information that could help you prepare for your next adventure. Even if you've spent a lifetime outdoors, a quick refresher could be the difference between being found and not being found.

🌏 Happy World Trails Day! 🥾

Today we celebrate the trails that help us connect with Country, nature, community and ourselves.

From coastal paths and urban trails to world-class hiking tracks and mountain bike networks, trails create opportunities to explore, discover and experience the outdoors in ways that enrich our lives.

Walking a trail on Country is an opportunity to connect with the land and its stories. As Jayden Boundry and Dylan Shillito share, by slowing down and listening, trails become places of reflection, connection, and wellbeing.

If you're looking for a sign to get outside today, this is it. Grab your walking shoes, hop on your bike, gather some friends or family, and head out to enjoy a trail near you.

However you choose to celebrate, we'd love to see where your adventures take you. Share your photos below and tag us in your World Trails Day experiences.

Autumn is a great time to cast a line across WA’s coastlines and rivers—but conditions can change quickly.

Before you head out fishing:
• Check weather, tides and swell conditions
• Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return
• Wear appropriate safety gear, including a lifejacket when boating or rock fishing

Remember to keep your toes in the sand and always fish with a mate when enjoying beach and coastal spots.

Stay prepared so your fishing trip is memorable for the right reasons.
