Lachlan Valley Railway train running weekend at Cowra is on the 24th & 25th October 2026. With train rides up to the Lachlan River bridge and return, in the 1927 CPH Railmotor.

Scheduled departure times from Cowra Station, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00noon, 1:30pm & 2:30pm, on both Saturday and Sunday.

Devonshire Teas will be also available in the beautiful lounge at Cowra station, on both days, from around 10:30am to 2:00pm unless otherwise sold out.

Tickets for the train rides and Devonshire Teas can be purchased on the day, at the ticket office Cowra Station.

FRIDAY FLASHBACK- A HISTORIC GATHERING OF STEAM AT PETERBOROUGH!

This month marks 50 years since Lachlan Valley Railway operated steam locomotive 5917 and its train, affectionately known as the Southern Centurion, made the remarkable journey from Parkes, NSW, to Peterborough, South Australia, to take part in the town’s centenary celebrations in October 1976.

What made Peterborough so special was its unique railway history. It was one of the few places in Australia where all three major railway gauges met – standard gauge (4 ft 8½ ), broad gauge (5 ft 3) and narrow gauge (3 ft 6) and for Peterborough, at the time was fortunate to have a historic gathering representing three different railway systems coming together for one extraordinary celebration.

For the young Lachlan Valley Railway, established only a few years earlier, taking 5917 all the way to South Australia was an incredible achievement and an important chapter in the organisation’s early history.

At a time when steam was rapidly disappearing from Australia’s main lines, the Peterborough Centenary was a wonderful demonstration of what dedicated railway enthusiasts could achieve through preservation.

50 years on, the photographs and memories of this remarkable gathering remain an important part of Australian railway preservation history.

LVR’s train running weekend is on at Cowra again, on the 26th & 27th September 2026. Train rides in the 1927 CPH 24 Railmotor, from Cowra Station to the Lachlan River bridge and return.

Schedule departure times from Cowra Station 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00noon, 1:30pm and 2:30pm Saturday & Sunday.

Devonshire Teas will be available Sunday only in the beautiful restored MBV961 lounge car at Cowra platform from around 10:30am through to 2:00pm.

Tickets for train rides and Devonshire teas can be purchased from the ticket office Cowra station on the day.

At Temora you will have ample time to wander up to town to a local pub or café, visit the rail museum at the platform or even head out for a look at the fabulous Temora Air Museum (NB: None of these options are included in the train fare). That's a wrap! 9 operational days out of the 11 since Neville and Joan left Orange. 3,408 km. 222 passengers (a double Nelson!). And massive thanks to Cruise Express in particular Ben Semple, the good people of Broken Hill, Olary Pub, Ainsworth Engineering and our outstanding LVR team.... As a former LVR Director called us (after he fled to Victoria!) the Little Railway That Could... Well we sure did!
