Visit Upper Murray

Visit Upper Murray Explore North East Victoria at the base of the Snowy Mountains, with scenic valleys, mountains, the clear waters of the Murray River, and more.

Welcome to the official page for Visit Upper Murray. Here in the heart of the high country, where the Murray River begins, is the source of the life that has shaped so many industries, communities and picture book landscapes since the dawn of time. The Upper Murray a wellspring, untouched in many ways by modern life. From fishing in its pristine waters to riding along the banks on horseback in the

tradition of the Man From Snowy River, this place is a place of long lost adventure ready to be rediscovered. And with such a fertile setting of lush farming fields, it's also a place of delicious produce and towns built on the back of rich agricultural history and a deep respect for the land which sustains them. Where Banjo Paterson once found inspiration, today's experience-hungry holiday makers and tree-changing families are also discovering the appeal of a traditional Australian bush life and the natural advantages that this ancient land holds. No longer a secret - the stories, the tastes and the experiences are finally finding their way to the wider world. More and more visitors are winding their way from town to charming town, soaking in the clean air, big skies, breathtaking mountain views and time spent in the great outdoors. The Upper Murray is more than the origin of the river. This is also the starting place for new stories and the word has passed around.

What if we told you one of Australia's largest monoliths is hiding in Victoria's Upper Murray?

Welcome to Yabbarin (Pine Mountain), a remarkable granite monolith in Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park. Reportedly around one and a half times the size of Uluru, it's one of the most fascinating natural landmarks in the Victorian High Country.

At the base of the mountain, the Yabbarin interpretive centre invites visitors to pause, explore interactive displays and discover the stories, geology and significance of this unique landscape.

Whether you're stopping for a closer look, learning something new, or simply taking in the sheer scale of Pine Mountain rising above the valley, it's a place that leaves a lasting impression.

What's the most surprising place you've discovered in Victoria's High Country?

Winter makes the Upper Murray quieter.

And that's exactly when nature gets louder.

Set out early along the Murray River near Towong or Walwa and you might spot kangaroos grazing in the morning mist. Look skyward and there's every chance you'll see a wedge-tailed eagle riding the thermals above the valley. Along the riverbanks, the calls of kookaburras, cockatoos and other native birds often break the stillness of a winter morning.

The best wildlife encounters don't usually happen when you're searching for them. They happen when you slow down, find a quiet spot and simply take in the surroundings.

So pack the binoculars, leave the schedule behind and let the Upper Murray reveal itself.

๐Ÿฆ… Wildlife spotting tip: Early morning and late afternoon are often the best times to be out exploring.

"We used to come here as kids."

It's something we hear often.

Families return to the Upper Murray years later and find themselves revisiting the same swimming holes, stopping at the same country pubs and taking the same winding drives through mountain valleys they remember from childhood.

Those simple traditions - camping by the river, fishing with family, exploring small country towns - have a way of becoming lifelong memories.

Some places change quickly. Others quietly become part of the family story.
