This Texan was out stretching it's wings at the aerodrome yesterday. The images were captured by one of our Followers - thanks for sharing John! Wonderful sound.

Last Wednesday we had a visit from a very hardy group of aviators! These are people who enjoy their flying in a way that connects them with the weather and elements like few other forms of aviation.
Members of the Southern Microlight Club flew in to Corowa Aerodrome and had a break and a warm beverage while waiting for conditions to improve further to the south. They were on a multi day adventure, flying to Rhylstone Aerodrome NSW and return. Wednesday saw them getting closer to home with this leg taking them from Temora Aerodrome NSW to Wahring VIC (near Mangalore/Seymour).
Trikes (as their aircraft are colloquially known) are a fantastic way to experience aviation and there are a number operating within the local region around Corowa.
FYI - the Southern Microlight Club is based in Melbourne, but their members are widespread. They have regular cross country events and members often get together for informal flying days in addition to the organised club activities. In 2027 the Club will celebrate it's 30th anniversary.
We never tire seeing all the different aircraft and aviators who visit Corowa! It was great to meet the SMC crew, who were having a wonderful adventure and sharing the best of times together.

Another interesting post from Corowa Federation Museum. The Aerodrome still serves as a refuge for aircraft encountering mechanical issues or poor weather while enroute even today. There are several examples in recent times which have not reached the media. Fortunately these days it isn't necessary to call out the local community to provide runway lighting - the lighting on 05/23 can be activated by pilots via their radios. FYI, there has been talk of the lights needing to be upgraded, however they are deemed compliant by CASA under a grandfathering clause. Aside from being used in emergency situations and normal operations, the Defence Force uses the lighting when they are doing their night time parachute training.

Fortunately, the pilot overcame the difficulty and didn’t have to make an emergency landing!

It’s wonderful how the town can come together in times of need. 🫶

Check out the latest video from the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia where they provide a round-up of the Fly-in and thank the local community, local businesses and community groups for their warm welcome and support during the event. This year's event was another huge success with over 100 aircraft and around 250 members attending the event. In addition there were numerous other people who visited the event from outside the area (travelling hundreds of kms in some instances) simply to experience the sights and sounds. It is conservatively estimated that the event brought in around $220,000 to the local economy this year alone. The AAAA members travelled from all over Australia. The members love the local area and our beautiful aerodrome. This event is a real showcase of what the area has to offer in terms of natural beauty, the warm and friendly community and the business opportunities. Enjoy!

A moment of personal indulgence - this is a CAC Wirraway which is hangared at Temora Aviation Museum and it was present at the AAAoA event. These aircraft were built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation between 1939 and 1946. My dear old grandpa Lawrence Hardy Fysh was an electrical engineer by trade and he served as a Sargeant in the RAAF during the war years. I remember as a young fella sitting on his knee and having him tell me how he worked on the Wirraways during that time. He may have even placed his hands (multimeter?) on this particular aircraft at some point. I was still young when he passed, but he was a kind and gentle soul and I miss him dearly. BTW - he is also credited as having wired the first house to have a 'proper' electricity connection in Beechworth (according to family lore).

Another special aircraft at the AAAoA event was Arthur Aero's 1944 Beechcraft Staggerwing D17-R(M). This aircraft has only recently been returned to airworthy condition by the Arthur Aero team after a hiatis. We were very fortunate to see it this year at Corowa Aerodrome. Apologies for the low quality video taken on a mobile phone.

What an absolute delight to see Corowa local, Kyron Smith, pick-up the Youth Encouragement Award at the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia dinner at Club Corowa on Saturday night in front of an audience of 250 people. Kyron accepted the award from the President of the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia, Gordon Rich-Phillips (Vic MP 1999-2022, ex Assistant Treasurer, Minister for WorkCover, Minister for the Aviation Industry and Minister for Technology).

Kyron owns a hangar at Corowa Aerodrome where he houses his immaculate Cessna 150 aircraft. Kyron is an inspirational young man who grew up with a love of aviation and who has - through hard work and determination - succeeded in his dream of becoming a pilot and owning his own aircraft at a very young age.

So, if you are outside and hear the gentle purring of a Continental O-200 engine passing overhead, look up and if you also see a flash of red and white, you are most likely watching Kyron fulfilling his childhood dream of being a pilot and flying on his own terms. Feel free to give him a wave as he passes over.

FYI, Kyron also won the Grand Champion Contemporary Aircraft at the AAAoA event in 2025. His aircraft is a credit to him and he keeps it in s***k and span shape.

Go that young man! 👏
