Coonawarra is renowned as one of Australia's finest wine regions and is particularly known for producing world class red wines especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Its secret lies in a magical marriage of rich red terra rossa soil, limestone, pure underground water and a long cool ripening season for the grapes. Today, Coonawarra vineyard land is prized like a precious gem. The cigar-shaped strip of 'te

rra rossa' is finite, only 12km long and 2km wide, and is all but taken up by vineyards. More than 24 Coonawarra wineries have cellar door sales outlets, mostly open seven days a week (except Christmas Day) and you will be warmly welcomed for tastings. The Coonawarra Vignerons Association plays host to a full calender of exciting events throughout the year. In January, The Coonawarra Cup will be contested at the Coonawarra Vignerons race meeting. The lights of vintage will be on in April as we celebrate vintage at Coonawarra After Dark. There are cultural activities and exhibitions all year round but brilliantly showcased in the Penola/Coonawarra Arts Festival in May. During the winter month of July our cellar door sales offer rare back vintage tastings of Coonawarra wines for Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers. The year reaches its pinnacle in October when Coonawarra celebrates its prized Cabernet style wines during the month-long Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations. There is something for all visitors to experience when making the journey to Coonawarra. Visit our website and discover more about our region, our community, the wines, accommodation options, regional activities and more.

Coonawarra Vignerons were proud to present the 2nd edition of the Deeper than the Dirt Tutorial series, this past fortnight for trade and media in Adelaide and Brisbane.

Hosted by Sarah Andrew, alongside Ben Harris (Wynns Coonawarra Estate), Matilda Innes (Ottelia Wines) , Dan Redman (Redman Wines) and Maddie LeMire (Balnaves of Coonawarra), guests were encouraged to explore more about Coonawarra than the terra rossa soil.

A 1971 Redman Claret kicked off the blind tasting alongside 15 other wines to showcase the past, present and future of the region.

Coonawarra is undoubtedly famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but there’s so much more to discover. Here’s a few facts that you may not have known:

🍷 The name Coonawarra is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning honeysuckle

🍷 Coonawarra is a tight knit community – there’s 135 people in the town (last census) and we very much work together.

🍷 Coonawarra is tiny – making up 2.3% of National Australian Vintage Crush (2025)

🍷 Whilst Coonawarra is relatively flat, there are distinct differences within the geographic area that mean there are nuances in the wines

🍷 We are a cool climate region – people forget about the Southern Ocean being 80km away. The average daily temperature is 18.8degrees whilst average daily winter temp is 9.8 degrees

🍷We’re testing different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon in the region – making sure we’re climate proof and thinking to the future.

🍷 Coonawarra has an eye to sustainability – 87% of total area under vine are members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

Thanks goes to SAWIA and the South Australian Govt. for supporting this event series and to all who came along with open minds and willingness to learn. I

Sheep still graze between the vines at Majella Wines.

In 1968 the Lynn family were prime lamb farmers who turned a terra rossa bank on the front paddock into a vineyard. Five generations on, they're still doing both.

Sixty hectares of vines now run along the eastern edge of the terra rossa strip, the same red soil that built Coonawarra's name. Cabernet and Shiraz, with a little Merlot and Riesling. All of it worked by one family that never left.

The wines carry the story, and few tell it quite like The Musician. This much-loved, and highly decorated wine has long had a place on Coonawarra tables. And in 2026, the accolades continue to roll in with the 2022 vintage recognised as Best Value at the 2026 Dan Murphy’s Best in Glass Awards.

Yet to discover The Musician? Pop into Majella on your next visit to Coonawarra or order online direct from the producer: 🍷 https://loom.ly/aPk7EJc
