This past weekend the Coonabarabran VRA was the host venue for a Vertical Rescue course where operatives from Brunswick Heads VRA, Manilla VRA, Dubbo VRA and 6 members of the Coonabarabran VRA attended. Vertical Rescue is a specialised rescue capability that isn’t for the faint hearted and requires an advance level of physical fitness to be able to successfully complete the course. With the Warrumbungle National Park in our backyard we are excited to have 6 new members from the Coona VRA enrolled and when completed will give us 7 members qualified for any Vertical Rescues in our region.

VALE - – Keith (Beefy) Roberts

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our Patron, Life member of the Coonabarabran Rescue Squad and most recently awarded Life Member of VRA Rescue NSW, Mr. Keith Raymond Roberts.

Keith first joined the Coonabarabran Rescue Squad on the 6th of August 1983 and dedicated an extraordinary 43 years of voluntary service to the coonabarabran community and district.

Throughout his decades of service, Beefy held many key executive positions within the squad from President through to Captain. His most recent roll was the honorary position as Patron of the squad which he had held for the past 6 years.

Beefy’s most active years were in his earlier years where he dedicated many hours helping to raise funds for the squad so we could purchase lifesaving rescue equipment. The squad was very active with tree lopping and removal as a way to raise money and Beefy regularly used his tip truck at his own cost to cart the green waste to the tip for us.

Beefy was also a very smart and competent rescue operator, especially with truck accidents. On many occasions Beefy’s knowledge was responsible for saving many people’s lives. Beefy was respected greatly from all members past and present, he had a wonderful sense of humour that warmed anyone to him that he came in contact with.

Beefy passed away peacefully after a long battle fighting an illness. His loss has deeply affected us all, and like his family, our hearts are hurting.

To the Roberts family, our Coonabarabran VRA Rescue family, our sister emergency service agencies, and the greater community, we extend our heartfelt and deepest condolences.

Beefy your service is now complete. You answered the call. Rest in peace.

VALE – Keith Raymond Roberts
May 7th 1959 – June 17th 2026
Aged 67 years.
May you rest in eternal peace.

Last night we got the opportunity to attend the 245 Army Cadets training session to talk about our roll as the GLR Rescue Service in Coonabarabran and community and to engage them in some hands on activities. Cadets from Coonabarabran, Coolah & Narrabri were there to try their hand at throwing a throw bag and some patient handling exercises. Thanks guys for giving us this opportunity to showcase our squad.

Five members of the Coonabarabran VRA traveled to the RFS Academy in Dubbo this weekend to gain their Air Base Operator qualification.
The team at the Coona VRA have built a great working relationship with the Castlereagh Zone RFS over the years, mainly at motor vehicle accidents and now that we have 5 members that have completed this specialised training we can now assist them further with Air base operations like marshalling and refilling air tanker water bombers and loading and unloading of helicopters at major fire events in our region.
It’s very important that all agencies can work well together and support each other wherever and whenever we can and the guys at the Coona VRA treasure the great relationship that we have built with the Castlereagh Zone RFS and all the RFS brigades that we work with.
